Wild Bill Cummings
"Wild Bill" Cummings was born on November 11, 1906, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He raced in several Indianapolis 500 races (from 1930-1938), winning the race in 1934 at a record speed of 104.6mph. Cummings died on Feb. 8,1939 as the result of a car crash in south Indianapolis.
Cummings participated in many other races, including the "Pacific Coast Championship" in California. He started racing on dirt tracks; his father worked at the Marmon Motor Company and got Bill interested in driving. He was a qualified mechanic, and sold used cars for a living. He owned a bar in Indianapolis called "The Lucky Seven" after the number of his car when he won the Indy 500.
