Survivor Review, Season 27, Episode 12
“Rustle Feathers”
Airs Wednesday at 8pm (Et) on CBS
It’s amazing to see just how vibrant Survivor feels this season, and the thrills are about more than picking rocks. It starts with the first scene of Hayden drawing out Gervase by crowning Tyson the victor. That conversation sets the stage for everything that follows, including an insane Tribal Council. It’s a rare case where a player with his back against the wall actually makes the correct arguments. By pressing the “Tyson as inevitable winner” story line, Hayden gets Gervase and Monica to say exactly what he wants. Ciera’s understated reactions say it all. She realizes that her road to victory doesn’t go through the Galang alliance. Monica’s reassurance that “four is better than six” isn’t what she wants to hear. Unlike the recent One World and South Pacific seasons, it...

Too crazy. Help me God, this episode of Survivor was too crazy. It’s a labyrinth within a spiral within a mirrored room within crazy. It’s the “Windmills of Your Mind” of Survivor. It was crazy. Gnarls Barkley “Crazy ” + Patsy Cline “Crazy” + Seal “Crazy” + that Kirsten Dunst movie Crazy/Beautiful (since Hayden is still hot and here). Let’s just break it all down and stop exclaiming “Crazy!” twenty times. But that said: Crazy! Aasvashfasdfh!
1. Caleb’s elimination is a big bowl of southern-fried depression.
I’m sorry, but there must be something slightly disappointing getting on Survivor, the ne plus ultra of reality programming, and fighting for your survival by stacking cards in the sand like a bored child on the Fourth of July. I mean, Big Brother challenges are definitely more physically demanding than that. Project Runway challenges might be more physically demanding than that. Tim Gunn...

Each week, host Jeff Probst answers a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: Blood vs. Water.
Entertainment Weekly: Tyson has the immunity idol again! It seems like the players that get it once often get it a second time, too. As a producer, are you hoping that immunity idols fall to different players over the course of a season?
Jeff Probst: The only thing we hope for is that an idol gets found! Idols add such an unpredictable dynamic to the game that it really doesn’t matter who has it – you just want it in...

Hold on to your torches, Survivor fans -- things are getting wacky and wonderful over on Palaui Island. While this season's poster child for go-with-the-flow blandness (i.e. Katie) has all but succumbed to her jury fate, Hayden's desperate play to stay in the game proved to be inspiring stuff. If you're the sort of person who gets inspired by dramatic, self-serving grand-standing, of course. (And who I am kidding? You watch Survivor, right?)
Let's break down Hayden's game play from last night and figure out what this all means for the approaching million dollar jury vote.

Survivor 27,Blood Vs Water eliminated Katie Collins in episode 12 tonight. Tonight's episode, kicked off with conversation footage. Hayden called Tyson out right in front of everyone, saying, he would win this game if he made it to the end. From there, Tyson started plotting Hayden's demise with Monica and some of the others in his alliance. Next, they showed Redemption Island dual footage with Caleb, Laura M, and Tina. In the challenge, they had to stack wooden cards up to a certain point for the win, or build their stack up higher than the others before 30 minutes ran out. Laura M finished ,first, by stacking her cards up to the designated point, while Tina was able to beat out Caleb by keeping her stack higher than his as his stack fell with just 10 seconds left on the clock. It was a tough break for Caleb, and got him ousted for good.

It's the same old story on "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" -- can anyone make a move against Tyson?
Kasama
Back from Tribal, Hayden makes a bold move by congratulating Tyson on his good move, but also telling the whole rest of the tribe that Tyson is playing the best game. No one can beat him at the end. But then weirdly Gervase starts yelling about how he's part of it, he's just as in control as Tyson. Nobody actually believes that, Gerv. Sorry.
Anyway, Tyson is pretty annoyed that Hayden "threw him under the bus," but what else was Hayden supposed to do at this point? Hayden correctly points out this is his only shot. He needs people to move against Tyson and the only way to do that is to make them realize none of them can win against him (which they can't).
When Tyson, Gervase, Ciera and Monica are alone,...

“Gloves Come Off”
Airs Wednesday at 8pm (Et) on CBS
One of the thrills of Survivor: Blood vs. Water has been watching everyone take a shot and really try to win the game. Even when plans blow up in their face, players aren’t meekly drifting towards their end. This makes it exciting for viewers who don’t want to see Boston Rob make a bunch of dummies look stupid. When Caleb and Hayden realize they can’t win against Tyson, it’s refreshing to watch them work to change their spot. Even though their strategy fails, that doesn’t mean the idea is false. If they had blindsided Tyson or removed Ciera, it would have put them in the driver’s seat to win the game. That risk is worth taking because the reward is a great shot at the finals. It only makes sense...

Our castaways are being fairly dominated by Tyson's game on "Survivor: Blood vs. Water," with Ciera even going along with a vote to oust her mother. Can anyone topple Tyson?
Post-Vote
Everyone at Kasama is acting so somber, like Ciera just sentenced her mom to death or something. At Redemption, Laura M is saying how tough it was -- Vytas and Tina are surprised Ciera did it. C'mon guys, it's not that serious.
Related: 'Survivor' castaways tell Zap2it what they're thankful for this year
Redemption Island
Jeff starts things off by saying, "Ciera voted you out of this game. She voted. her mom. out." And Ciera and Laura cry. Again with the melodrama. Stop, you guys. This is getting silly.
Anyway, the challenge is rolling wooden cubes through a rope tunnel, then stacking the cubes so that each side of the four-cube tower has no repeat colors.

It's Thanksgiving week and we're thankful for two things -- first, the above exclusive sneak peek clip of Wednesday night's (Nov. 27) "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" episode, which is all new (not a clip show episode).
We're also thankful for the wonderful castaways who are still on the show that took time out of their busy schedules to tell Zap2it what they're thankful for this year.
Tyson: "I'm thankful for my smokin' hot girlfriend, loving family and friends and a body that won't quit."
Katie: "Every Thanksgiving I'm grateful for family and health and safety. This year more than ever I'm thankful for the opportunities I've been blessed with. Some families aren't even guaranteed a bag of rice for their "tribe" or shelter from natural disasters such as tsunamis. Praying everyone can be grateful for something this year."

Aras Baskauskas was the first member of the jury on "Survivor: Blood vs. Water." We wondered why a former winner might go back and play again, but he tells Zap2it that he's just a huge fan of the show.
What made you go back on "Survivor"? You won the game, so it's not like you had anything to prove?
"My brother put a gun to my head and said, 'Do it!' No [laughs]. I wasn't a fan of the show before I went on the first time but I've since become a huge fan of the show. Like don't-miss-an-episode fan of the show. ... As a fan of the show, I wanted to play again. You don't ask Kobe Bryant why he plays the next season after he wins a championship -- not that I"m Kobe Bryant or this is basketball. But I had so much fun playing the first time,...

Welcome back to another installment of Survivor (over) analysis! On this week's episode, the grand loved ones experiment has semi-officially bit the dust. Yep, it's all "water" now, folks. Every pair has been broken up, and even the faint promise of Redemption Island offers reuniting hope for only two pairs: Tina & Katie and Laura & Ciera.
However, I'm not concerned with those weepy/stoic mother-daughter pairs. This game needs to be all about Vytas moving forward. Here's why:...

Survivor Review, Season 27, Episode 10
“Big Bad Wolf”
Airs Wednesday at 8pm (Et) on CBS
When Jeff Probst and the Survivor producers created the Blood vs. Water concept, they prayed for a moment like tonight’s vote. Ciera writes down her mom’s name to secure her place, but it isn’t even necessary for the 7-1 outcome. The heart of the episode is the ongoing conversation between Laura and Ciera about their future. While the music swells in the background, their confessionals show the value of having family members together in the game. Once Tyson decides to focus on Laura, her exit is set barring an immunity victory. Even so, that doesn’t bring down the episode because so much is happening beyond the game. When Laura tears up after Ciera discusses the possibility of voting for her, it’s a genuine moment in a competition based on lying. She...

Survivor 27,Blood Vs Water eliminated Laura Morett in episode 10 tonight. Tonight's show, kicked off with conversation footage. Ciera and her veteran mother ,Laura M, were spotted, talking strategy, moving forward and they both noticed that Ciera was giving most of the orders for a little role reversal ,since she's actually doing better than Laura. After a break, they showed Redemption Island dual footage with Vytas,Aras, and Tina. It was a table maze challenge that ended with Vytas finishing first, and Tina coming in 2nd place, which meant that past champion ,Aras, got permanently eliminated. Since Vytas finished first, he was able to give a hidden immunity idol clue to one of the contestants, and he opted to give it to Tina's daughter, Katie. And unlike a lot of the others before her ,Katie decided to keep the immunity idol instead of burning it. After all that, they showed more conversation footage.

The "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" castaways have merged and now it's our first post-merge Redemption Island duel. Will the Baskauskas brothers survive?
Redemption Island
The challenge is using a grappling hook to retrieve bags, then getting a ball through a table maze. So, Tina has a shot. It's not like something that is ridiculously favoring a fit young man -- and then look at that, Tina gets her first bag with her first toss.
And then Tina has all three bags in four tosses, incredible. But they all get to the table maze before someone has won, so it really is anybody's game. One wrong move and you're back at the beginning -- like Aras does right at the start.
Tina Almost has it and then it drops through the last hole. I actually shrieked out loud, that was super tense, haha. Then Vytas wins and is still in the game.

[Spoiler Alert: Read on only if you have already watched Wednesday’s episode of Survivor: Blood vs. Water.]
Water finally won. Survivor history was made tonight as we had our very first instance of a player voting out a loved one when Ciera joined the majority to boot her mom Laura off the tribe and to Redemption Island, where she will do battle against Tina and Vytas to stay in the game. Tina and Vytas both defeated Aras in tonight’s duel — which involved retrieving balls with a grappling hook and then using one of the balls to navigate a table maze — meaning Aras was eliminated. [Update: Dalton's full recap is now live!] A few other notable moments from tonight’s episode:
• The clue actually survived!

Survivor Review, Season 27, Episode 9
“My Brother’s Keeper”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Considering the tremendous amount of footage that’s shot on each day of Survivor, it’s remarkable that the stories flow so smoothly. The combination of camp life, challenges, and Tribal Council works swiftly to keep the audience engaged throughout the hour. When the producers choose to cram two eliminations into one episode, it cranks up the pace to a ridiculous level. The story becomes a frenetic ride through challenge/Tribal Council/challenge/Tribal Council, with a bit of strategy thrown in the middle. The downside is the lack of much context to the votes and alliances set in place for the future. On the other hand, it avoids the drag of predictable exits. Vytas and Tina are the obvious choices to go next, and the cracks are just a set up for the battles to come.

I want to start with an apology, because you’re owed one: I am so, so sorry for ever assuming Vytas and Aras would dominate this game.
I did actually think that. Because um, uh, hmmm — well, what was I thinking? If anyone on Survivor was functioning at even 4% brain capacity, he’d/she’d have noted to the others, “You know? Maybe we should target the cocky yoga daddies with perfect bodies and metallic veins? They might be a threat? Ok, back to my vegetative state, I have 4% of a brain. Goodnight.”
Of course Vytas and Aras would both be voted out. I vow never to make a similarly dumb prediction, and that means we should start thinking about which remaining competitors are the Andy Herrens of this season, the non-threats who are canny enough to realize they must work to remain non-threats. Gervase is still the standout candidate,...

Jeff Probst: Over the last two years I’ve spent nearly eight months in the Philippines. Some of the nicest, hardest working and most humble people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Seeing this devastation is truly heartbreaking.

Survivor 27,Blood Vs Water eliminated Vytas Baskauskas & Tina Wesson in episode 9 tonight. Tonight's show, kicked off with more conversation footage. Tina tried to get upset with Tyson for spear-heading the votes to get Aras out at the last tribal counsel, but Tyson wasn't having it, and explained his case as to why he didn't trust Aras. This left Tina, feeling uneasy about her place in the game, prompting her to warn her daughter, Katie, to create her own alliances and not worry about her. Next, Immunity challenge footage was shown. It was a disgusting worm and other rodent-eating contest with three rounds. It came down to Monica and Gervase, and Monica pulled it out for the win. Man, she was a trooper. After a break, they showed more conversation footage. Vytas and Katie's names were mentioned as possible targets. As talks progressed, more emphasis towards getting rid of Katie,...

When we last left the "Survivor: Blood vs. Water" castaways, Aras was the victim of a "vicious blindside," according to the Jeff Probst Voiceover. We aren't sure we'd all it "vicious," but it was a blindside.
Kasama
Vytas is congratulating everyone on the blindside, though he has sworn vengeance. Tina, meanwhile, is not taking it as well. Her "congrats" is less than sincere and she immediately says all the people who went against Aras now have five jury votes that won't go their way. As Tyson says, Tina's not really a "gamer" and she needs to stop acting like everybody is just going to be nice all the time.
That may have been what happened in Australia, but that was a long time ago -- and also a bit of an aberration.
But to Tina's credit, she tells Katie to play her own game and not feel like...

There were two Tribal Councils on tonight’s episode of Survivor, yet because the show was restocking Redemption Island, that meant nobody was actually eliminated when all was said and done. My full recap will be up at midnight (Update: Dalton’s full Survivor recap is live), but if you want to know the particulars or sound off on what happened, read on for more. [Spoiler Alert: Read on if only if you have already watched Wednesday’s episode of Survivor: Blood vs. Water.]
The first of the evening’s two immunity challenges was an old fashioned disgusting food eating contest. Gervase — who was the worst out of everybody when he took part in the first iteration back in season 1 — redeemed himself well here,...

“Skin of My Teeth”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
In one of the most telegraphed blindsides in Survivor history, this week’s vote flips the game on its head and pushes the once-confident leaders to the brink. Rarely have the editors spent this much time setting up a pivotal blindside. Unlike nervous players like Monica and Laura Morett, Aras doesn’t have a past failure to make him worry. He’s confident that the game will work out and doesn’t recognize the danger of standing in front. The key mistake is trusting that Gervase and Tyson will let the couples run the show. And that’s hardly the only miscalculation. Tina makes a ridiculous gaffe and tells Monica she’s fifth on the totem pole. The amazing part is that she sells it like a benefit. It takes some convincing from Tyson, but...

On the latest episode of "Survivor: Blood vs. Water," it's time for one of the Redemption Islanders to rejoin the game -- who ya got, John or one of the Lauras?
Galang
But first, Vytas makes sure he has the women wrapped around his finger, spinning tales of the four of them plus Aras and Gervase in a strong alliance of six. But he's totally full of it. It's a good strategy, these women are eating out of Vytas' hand.
Redemption Island
Laura B. spins her tale of woe, but you have to think John is doing a happy dance in his head about who he is competing against in the duel. Laura B. says it's a huge mistake for Galang to take out her instead of Vytas and we have to say -- she's 100 percent correct. She's an easy vote later, plus she won't defect to team up...

Before this season of Survivor: Blood vs. Water began, I tweeted out that my pre-game interview with Aras and Vytas Baskuaskas was the most impressive I had ever done. So in that sense, it is not surprising they both made it to the merge, which happens on tonight’s episode. But when you consider all they have been through to this point — Aras being targeted by former alliance partner Tyson; Vytas being the sole male on the Galang tribe — it was by no means a given they would make it this far. But they did. And now, in an EW.

“Swoop in for the Kill”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Survivor: Blood vs. Water has been filled with personal stories and conflicts that have made it one of the most consistent seasons of recent years. Even an arrogant goofball like Brad Culpepper offered plenty of entertainment with his failed strategy and the anger he inspired in others. We’ve seen players truly moved by the plight of their loved ones, and there’s been a greater sense of fun during the challenges. On the other hand, there’s the story of Laura Boneham. After being voted out on the first day and saved by her husband Rupert, she settled into a background role. Others have called her annoying or ridiculed her attempts at strategy, but her position was secure. Why vote out someone who’s barely a threat? Laura seems like a nice person,...

Each week, host Jeff Probst will answer a few questions about the most recent episode of Survivor: Blood vs. Water.
Entertainment Weekly: I have asked you this before, but in light of Laura blatantly copying off of John’s puzzle at the duel, and Kat not wanting to do it because she viewed it as “cheating,” it seems worth asking again: Why not put blinders up so contestants can not copy off of each other during puzzles, especially since it can give the person closer to the completed one (in this case, Laura) an advantage?
Jeff Probst: Complicated question and answer.

When we last left our intrepid castaways on "Survivor: Blood vs. Water," Kat was shipped off to Redemption Island. When she gets there, she blasts her tribe members, making us kind of giggle when she calls Tina's daughter a tag-along.
Redemption Island
In the morning, Kat is crying and worried that Hayden is going to be upset with her and ashamed of her. Ok, we've actually spent a lot of time with Hayden and he's a really good guy. Seriously, he's so super nice. There's no way he would feel that way, though it's kind of alarming that Kat thinks so.
She cries when they arrive at the arena and starts blubbering out an apology. Probst questions them and Hayden says he doesn't view her any differently and his relationship is more important than the game. So Probst challenges him to take Kat's spot right now.
Honestly, that's not fair,...

Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
In the pre-merge game of Survivor, it’s easy to think too far ahead and step into the muck. During her first appearance in One World, Kat believed in her alliance and felt betrayed when they kicked her out. She was a fun character who talked constantly and didn’t really understand the game. Kat’s goofy personality drew a return invitation, and she has spent this season under the radar. Of course, this week reminds us that changing your limited game isn’t so easy. Her feeble attempts to stir the pot blow up in her face and kick her right to Redemption Island. Apparently Kat hasn’t spent much time watching the Australia season. Tina is an intelligent player who has no qualms about stabbing others in the back. She’s immensely loyal to her alliance,...

Based on the commercials running all week, it's tribe shakeup time on "Survivor: Blood vs. Water." And just when Tadhana finally won one, too.
Galang
Laura Boneham is happy to be still here, while Tina is murdering some kind of metaphor about an octopus. Octopi don't have legs, Tina. The next morning, Tyson and Gervase think perhaps the next vote is the time to cut Aras, before he can reunite with his brother at the merge. Gervase wants to be the chess master and not the chess piece this time, you see. Hmmm. We aren't sure these two can really be some kind of braintrust, but you never know. We also thought no one would Ever give up Immunity at Tribal Council and Erik totally did, so.
Redemption Island
Ciera is sad to see her mom voted out and Laura assures her, "We're still in this." It's interesting to see...

Whoops! Apparently the challenge in this week’s episode of Survivor was to simply remember the instructions to the challenge. In a blooper that would make Dick Clark and Ed McMahon proud, Tina and Laura from the new Galang tribe swam out to retrieve a fishing trap, and then swam back…without the fishing trap! It was a costly error from the veteran and the newbie as it put their tribe in a deep hole they were unable to crawl out of, even if the team did twice celebrate winning the challenge when they thought they had come from behind to solve the puzzle correctly.

“The Dead Can Still Talk”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Considering all the twists in Survivor: Blood vs. Water, the old-school vibe has been a refreshing surprise. The family connections are forcing the editors to show the personalities of more than just a few star players. Laura Morett hasn’t received many interviews, but there’s been enough to show her place in the tribe. She thinks creepily flirting with Aras and doing well in challenges will keep her alive. Meanwhile, Laura Boneham is struggling to connect with players who’ve known each other for years. The promos spotlighted a huge blindside, but the logic in the vote is pretty simple. The five-person alliance picks their second or third choice with hopes of thwarting Brad at Redemption Island. The “no strategy” plan is keeping several players in the dark and hiding the alliance’s existence.

"Oh yeah, definitely. It was such a unique experience. Something that millions of people would die to be in my shoes for. I did not see being the first person voted out coming at all. I would've bet money before the game that that would not be me. Usually it's someone who's really annoying or sucks in the challenge and I was thinking that's definitely not me. When change-ups occur, they usually use the immunity idol. This move involves doing math and realizing it wouldn’t take much to kick out the figurehead. By announcing his vote for Brad in front of everyone, Caleb realizes he can sway the girls’ votes and create a 3-3 tie. Players don’t want to pull rocks, so the odds of taking out Brad are very good. But what if those newbies could come play with someone else that was not their loved one? Whom then would they pick? I asked them that very question while out on location before the game began. (Well, I asked most of them that question.
