The National Geographic documentary “Fly” opens with vintage footage of Franz Reichelt’s infamous 1912 attempt to jump off the Eiffel Tower wearing wings, resulting in his death. It’s a disturbing image but also, somewhat grimly, a funny one in the foolishness of the endeavor. Who in their right mind would do such a thing?
That dichotomy hangs over the rest of this film about Base jumping from directors Christina Clusiau and Shaul Schwarz. The movie attempts to highlight the beauty of the sport while grappling with how absurdly dangerous it is. It succeeds at highlighting the extreme personalities of those drawn to such an endeavor, but fails to make those of us that would prefer to remain with our feet on the ground understand why it’s worth it.

National Geographic Documentary Films announced today that the exhilarating Base jumping documentary Fly will have an exclusive limited engagement in 300+ IMAX theatres on Sept. 2 and 3, followed by its television and streaming debut.
The film, which world premiered in March at SXSW and screened at Hot Docs, offers audiences an opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the film’s thrilling, gravity-defying adventures on the largest screens possible. Following the IMAX release, Fly will have its broadcast debut on National Geographic Channel on Sept. 24 and will stream the following day on Disney+ and Hulu.
