Why Watch? Tense and then head-tilting, this short from Drew Cooke is a strong example of taking familiar ingredients and offering up a few tricks to keep things interesting. The recipe here is stock — take an empty house with strange noises, add a beautiful woman (Kollyn Muangmaithong) running up the stairs instead of out the front door and shake vigorously — but the added flavor comes from an eclectic light show and a curious question as to what’s really going on. But beyond the pleasant (if slight) slight-of-hand, the film succeeds because of unnerving camera work and shrewd editing that creates a powerful presentation of the simplest fear. It’s armrest-gripping in a raw, instinctual way. Cooke obviously realizes that waiting for the hammer to fall is the hardest part. What Will It Cost? About 7 minutes.
