Project Greenlight Digital Studios, in partnership with Issa Rae’s ColorCreative.TV, has announced the new series “Minimum Wage,” a six-episode comedic anthology series centered around five unique employees who work at a run-down fast food restaurant in La’s Koreatown as they try desperately to improve its business in addition to their personal lives. There series is executive produced by Rae, best known as the creator and star of the new HBO series “Insecure” and the web series “Awkward Black Girl.”

My Dear Americans, a short film by Arpita Kumar, won the People’s Choice award at the PBS Online film festival where viewers voted for their favorite film from June 16- July 31. More than 50,000 votes were cast for the winner.
In My Dear Americans, an overly excited husband tries to cheer up his wife as they prepare to celebrate Fourth of July in their brand new home – complete with matching American flag T-shirts. However, as the Indian-American couple adjusts to life in the suburbs, they are soon exposed to local ignorance and prejudice that threatens to dampen their spirits.
A short narrative funded by Film Independent and PBS, the film was directed by Arpita Kumar who grew up in India and works as a filmmaker and professor in California. The short was produced during Film Independent’s Project Involve production program for diverse filmmakers.

Nagesh Kukunoor and Anurag Kashyap aren’t showing their films for the first time at the New York Indian Film Festival. But many young filmmakers are. Take a look at the opening night gala of the fourteenth edition of the festival as it kickstarts the weeklong celebration of the best of art house cinema from India. It opened on Monday, May 5 with the screening of Kashyap’s hard-hitting new film Ugly. Shelly Walia brings you the latest news and interviews from the red carpet at New York’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.
Festival director Aseem Chhabra smiles, but shies away from looking into the camera. Earlier in the day, he tweeted, “Are you guys ready for the… six-day movie tamasha?”

Shubhashish Bhutiani’s Kush received honourable mention in the Best International Short Film award category at the Cleveland International Film Festival in the USA. Kush, based on the Sikhs riots of 1984, had earlier won the Orizzonti award for Best Short Film at Venice Film Festival and was long-listed for the Oscars. Read Shubhashish Bhutiani’s interview here.
Arpita Kumar’s My Dear Americans has received honourable mention in Best Women’s Short Film Award category at the festival. A 7 minute short, the film revolves around a Sikh couple, new immigrants to the USA, who encounter racism on the fourth of July holiday.
An Indo-usa co-production of Emmy award-winning filmmaker Jesse Roesler, The Starfish Throwers, is one of the nine runners up for the Roxanne T. Mueller Audience Choice Award for Best Film. The documentary chronicles three charitable people and the often extraordinary costs to themselves and their families.
