Despite their best efforts—and launching during a pandemic probably didn’t help—the mobile streaming service Quibi has called it quits. Last month, chiefs Jeffery Katzenberg and Meg Whitman made the difficult determination that after spending nearly $2 billion, it was time to shut down the endeavor. Quibi will be up and running until the end of the year, and we still maintain one of the best things you can see on the service is “Wireless,” from director Zach Wechter and executive producer Steven Soderbergh—a deeply unique and inventive single-setting tech thriller that transports you into the phone of the protagonist and employs the portrait and landscape perspective shifts of a phone in a way you’ve never seen before.

When Quibi launched earlier this year, the platform was hoping that a mixture of new technology and A-list talent would drive interesting in its mobile-first streaming service. Unfortunately, that didn’t totally pan out, and the company is struggling to remain in business, reportedly. However, that doesn’t mean the earlier Quibi shows didn’t have some standouts or at least series that struck a chord with some viewers, such as “50 States of Fright.”

As the great streaming glut of 2020 threatened to drown audiences in content—Disney+, HBO Max, AppleTV+ Peacock, etc.— in the confusion of it all (and untimely pandemic), viewers were content to skip the new microcontent mobile app and streaming service, Quibi. In the March chaos of Covid-19 (soon before the service launched), Quibi failed to answer basic questions about themselves and their model: are people willing to watch TV series primarily on their mobile devices?

Quibi has slotted September 14 for the premiere of Steven Soderbergh’s survival thriller series Wireless, starring Tye Sheridan. We’re also getting a first look at a just-released image above.
In Wireless, on a sparsely traveled road deep in the Colorado mountains, college student Andy Braddock (Sheridan) drives to a New Years Eve party to try to rekindle a relationship with his ex-girlfriend. Distracted by his phone, Andy collides with a snowbank and hurtles into a ravine. Wounded and alone, Andy turns to his quickly dying cell for rescue, but help is far from a phone call away.
Cast also includes Lukas Gage, Francesca Reale, Mace Coronel, Sydney Park and Andie MacDowell,
Wireless is created and exec produced by newcomers Zach Wechter and Jack Seidman (Pocket). Soderbergh executive produces alongside Michael Sugar, Cathy Konrad and Danny Sherman, Wechter — who also directs the series, which is in production — and Seidman. Alpine...

Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman took the stage Wednesday morning at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas at the Park MGM theater to give a look at the much-buzzed-about mobile streaming short-form platform. This was the first time that Quibi has shown their innovative platform to an audience — and the audience at CES was into it.
The panel started with a video that showed the evolution of entertainment consumption before including glimpses of some of the platform’s A-list creators including Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, Antoine Fuqua, Peter Farrelly, Catherine Hardwicke and Reese Witherspoon. The video was really selling us on the innovation of Quibi and how “the future is in our hands” — literally.

Las Vegas — Here comes Quibi.
Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman revved up the public launch campaign Wednesday morning at the CES conference for the streaming service billed as the first platform for original short-form content designed to be viewed on smartphones and other mobile devices. The pair talked up plans to launch with some 175 series in the first year, with plans to deliver three hours of fresh content each day.
Quibi has been in the works for two and a half years. It’s been Katzenberg’s primary focus since the 2016 sale of DreamWorks Animation to Comcast. He has recruited all of the major media giants as investors in the ambitious ventures, and seemingly everyone in the creative community is working on a show or two for the platform.
But with the April 6 launch date approaching, the consumer PR effort is the new focus, starting Wednesday with the launch of Quibi.

The X-Men actor will have to rely on his phone to survive in the new streaming project
Quibi, aka the upcoming streaming service where all the TV series episodes are about 7-10 minutes long, has added another intriguing small screen project to its in-development slate.
Tye Sheridan (Ready Player One) has grabbed a starring role in Wireless, which touts Steven Soderbergh as its executive producer. The show has been created for Quibi by a pair of newcomers called Zach Wechter and Jack Seidman, whose short film Pocket definitely seems to have caught the attention of Soderbergh.
Per Deadline, Wireless follows Sheridan's "self-obsessed college student" as he gets stranded in the Colorado mountains. His only hope for survival? His phone - the thriller appears to be entirely set inside his crashed car, as he clutches "the quickly dying phone that now is his lifeline."

Quibi has ordered another show with notable Hollywood talent attached: scripted series “Wireless” starring Tye Sheridan with Steven Soderbergh on board as executive producer.
In the made-for-mobile-screens thriller, a smartphone has a central role. Sheridan plays a self-obsessed college student who is stranded in the Colorado mountains after he crashes his car — and his only hope of being rescued is his quickly dying phone. “Wireless” is billed as “a survival movie for the next generation about the lies we tell through our phones, and the lies our phones tell us.”
The series is created and executive produced by filmmakers Jack Seidman and Zach Wechter, with executive producers Soderbergh, Michael Sugar, Cathy Konrad and Danny Sherman. Ben Silverman, Howard Owens and Greg Lipstone are executive producers for Propagate along with Isabel San Vargas, who is a producer. Wechter will direct the series, which begins production this week. Why Watch? Almost a decade ago, Rian Johnson turned eyebrows with Brick by passionately sticking to noir conventions while subverting them just enough to breathe fresh life into a musty genre. To be fair to that genre, it’s one that will eternally and repeatedly enjoy new resurgences, potentially along the same tidal lines as the western, and Brick hit just at the right moment with all the right ingredients. This short film from Zach Wechter follows that same formula, and through doing so, reminds us that its the familiarity of the story beats that keeps entries in this seedy world so satisfying. Like Johnson’s film, Straight Down Low (announcing its genre right there in the title) asks a cast of high school students to get to the bottom of a gangland murder, and in not attempting to reinvent the wheel, he instead conducts a master class in cool. Beyond...

As I’ve said before on this site, I love films (and especially black films) that go in unexpected directions. And as I have also said, there are 40 million black people in the USA, which means there are 40 million different stories. So as a filmmaker, why do the same old, same old? Here comes filmmaker Zach Wechter with his short film "Straight Down Low," which definitely puts a different spin on things. Don’t let the title fool you, as It’s not some routine gangsta hood picture, nor is it another one of those “nice black woman who marries a good man only to find out that he’s on the down low and now she’s HIV positive,” kinds of films (How many of those have been made in...

Waylon Bacon is going home again. Bacon, a graduate of Albany High School, will be showing his latest demented masterpiece, Help Wanted, and participating in a post-screening Q&A at the 2nd annual Albany Film Festival, which takes place on March 3.
Help Wanted is a horror comedy about the world’s worst job: Processing the dead victims of hit men and other hired killers. It’s a sick, twisted and absolutely hilarious epic short film. Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film reviewed it back in 2010, calling it “funny and frightening.”
Joining Bacon on-stage will be filmmaker Hoku Uchiyama, another Albany High grad, with his own short film, Rose, a rural American ghost story.
The Albany Film Festival is screening primarily short films from Noon to 8:00 p.m., kicking things off with the absolutely charming The Squash by Bobby Young.
However, there will be two special feature films on hand.
