Sffilm on Wednesday unveiled the program slate of the Sloan Science in Cinema Initiative at the 67th San Francisco International Film Festival, which runs April 24–28. Presented in a partnership between the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Sffilm, this year’s program includes three films and participation by Sloan fellows and grant recipients at events throughout the festival.
Curated programs include three titles selected by Jessie Fairbanks, Sffilm’s Director of Programming. First is the world premiere of On the Invention of Species from director Tania Hermida, also being honored as the 2024 recipient of the Sffilm Sloan Science on Screen Award. This award carries a $5,000 cash prize and celebrates the compelling depiction of scientific themes or characters in a narrative feature film.

In the 16 years since “An Inconvenient Truth” became an unlikely box-office sleeper and Oscar winner, the climate change documentary has grown into its own distinct subgenre — one that has to devise increasingly eye-catching ways to net the attention of viewers who may have heard the message before, but have yet to really internalize it. The Al Gore-led PowerPoint presentation of Davis Guggenheim’s film looks positively quaint beside the grandiose, you-are-there spectacle of “Into the Ice,” which keeps the science simple and instead concentrates on ravishing imagery to remind us of a grim, inarguable and oft-repeated reality: The ice caps are melting, and we are barely doing a thing about it.
The first theatrical feature by nature-focused Danish docmaker Lars Henrik Ostenfeld, “Into the Ice” may not be especially novel in form or function, but its immersive journey into Greenland’s ice sheet is enough of a wow to...

The Sffilm Documentary Film Fund (Dff) officially has deemed the 2021 winners.
Now in its 10th year, Dff awarded a total of $60,000 in grant funding to four documentary projects, in $15,000 increments each. The funding will support feature-length documentaries in post-production.
Per the official Sffilm announcement, the Dff supports “non-fiction films that are distinguished by compelling stories, intriguing characters, and an innovative visual approach.” The 2021 winners include “Against the Tide,” “Driver,” “Hummingbirds,” and “Weed Dreams.”
“In an incredibly competitive slate of submissions, we are thrilled with the winning selections,” Masashi Niwano, Sffilm Director of Artist Development, said. “All of these films explore the human experience in new and powerful ways that truly moved our jury to tears.”
Since its founding in 2011, the Sffilm Documentary Film Fund has distributed nearly $1 million to filmmakers across the nation. The 2021 Dff is made possible by support from Jennifer Hymes Battat and the Jenerosity Foundation.

The Center for Asian American Media (Caam) wrapped up this year’s festival, CAAMFest 2021, with 11 days featuring drive-in, live online screenings, and on-demand programs. Surprisingly, no one film won multiple accolades. SXSW premieres featured prominently in this year’s selection. Debbie Lum‘s “Try Harder!” — a documentary featuring Sf’s most prestigious high school, Lowell High — opened this year’s CAAMFest. “Inbetween Girl” by Mei Makino and “See You Then” by Mari Walker also returned from Texas to sweep the narrative awards in San Francisco. Festival-appointed highlights did not go unnoticed either. Centerpiece presentation documentary “Manzanar Diverted: When Water Becomes Dust” took home the Jury Mention...
