An aspiring singer from Nashville, Tenn., defended herself in an online rant, days after she was charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting a homeless man.
Katie Quackenbush, who goes by the stage name Katie Layne, was arrested Monday. Police believe the 26-year-old shot Gerald Melton, 54, twice near the famed Music Row on August 26.
According to a news release from Metro Nashville Police, Melton was “trying to sleep on the sidewalk” during early hours when he was “disturbed by exhaust fumes and loud music” allegedly coming from Quackenbush’s Porsche SUV.
According to police, Melton asked Quackenbush to move the vehicle and an argument ensued.

Following its world premiere last year at the SXSW Film Festival, Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word is now out on home media (including DVD and VOD platforms) from Momentum Pictures, and to commemorate the film's release, we caught up with director Simon Rumley in our latest Q&A feature to discuss adapting the tragic real-life story, the film's shooting schedule, what initially drew him to the project, and more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Simon. What drew you to the real-life story of Johnny Frank Garrett?
Simon Rumley: My pleasure! I first watched the documentary called The Last Word by Jesse Quackenbush, which is an amazing viewing experience. Jesse’s an attorney, so it dealt much more with the legalese of the situation and thus the unfairness of the trial and the multiple inconsistencies that were put forward by the prosecution. I...

In October 1981, Sister Tadea Benz, a 76-year-old nun, was raped, strangled, beaten and stabbed to death. Johnny Frank Garrett, age 17 at the time the crimes were committed, was later convicted. He was executed in February 1992, one of more than 500 people who have been executed in the state of Texas since 1982. His case was examined in the 2008 documentary The Last Word by Jesse Quackenbush, which argued for Garrett's innocence, and serves as the basis for a new fictional feature, Johnny Frank Garrett's Last Word, directed by Simon Rumley. The film quickly introduces fictional elements. Adam Redman (Mike Doyle, The Invitation) finds himself the lone holdout on a jury that very much believes Garrett is guilty. Redman raises reasonable questions that...

Can you take a real-life tragedy and turn it into the film? Sure, if you're making it as a drama-- that's practically the backbone of Oscar bait. But can you take a real-life tragedy, fictionalize it a bit, and rework it as a horror film? That's a whole lot dicier. But FilmDistrict is willing to give it a shot, as Variety reports they will co-finance The Last Word, a supernatural horror film based on the documentary of the same name. FilmDistrict.s first film was Insidious, and they last distributed the Evil Dead remake, so they.re quite familiar with genre fare. But this, at least on paper, is markedly different from anything they.ve worked with before. In case you.ve never seen Jesse Quackenbush.s nerve-jangling documentary . and seek it out when possible . it.s about the death of Johnny Frank Garrett, the mentally retarded man who was...

Chilling. That's the only word that comes to mind while watching the documentary The Last Word. If you've never seen it, do yourself a favor... it's out there and it's dirt cheap. The last ten minutes of the movie will floor you and leave you with your jaw agape. It's that damned good.
Apparently the folks over at FilmDistrict feel the same way because they announced today that they will co-finance the supernatural thriller The Last Word, which is inspired by the tragic and true story of Johnny Frank Garrett (pictured). Ben Ketai, who's currently directing Beneath for Revolver Pictures, wrote the script.
