He was a prominent combat photojournalist who covered WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He talked his way onto the USS Missouri so he could photograph the Japanese surrender in 1945.
He joined the Marines during WWII. His military honors included the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.
He graduated from the University of Miami with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and zoology. He contributed photos to National Geographic, including pictures of sea turtles and swordfish.
He took an estimated 50,000 photographs of Pablo Picasso and his works.
