- In 1998, Junker went to Najayo, Dominican Republic to do community service for two weeks during the summer. She loved the DR so much that she decided to stay in Santo Domingo and go to college. Junker attended Universidad Iberoamericana and studied psychology from 1998 to 2001.
- In 2001, Junker transferred her college credits from the Dominican Republic to the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico in San Juan. She completed her senior year of college there and graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in psychology.
- In January 2004, Junker began graduate school at Columbia University in New York City. Three months later, Karina's mother was in an automobile accident that left her in a vegetative state. Junker felt she had no other option but to continue her studies. Despite the difficulty and hardship, Junker graduated in 2006 and obtained her Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in clinical psychology. Her mother was in a persistent vegetative state for nine years and passed away in 2013.
