Every week there are large numbers of indie and specialty releases vying for attention. It’s impossible to do them all, so when the option of reviewing Nowhere Special was placed in front of me I resisted at first after discovering it actually premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival. That’s right, four years ago. I had to wonder what could possibly be good about a film delayed for that long in terms of getting a U.S. release date? This week a new Australian film will premiere at Utah's Slamdance, the festival at which first-time, low-budget filmmakers can strut their stuff.
Slamdance has seen the world premieres of films such as The King of Kong, Paranormal Activity.and Following, the debut of a 29 year-old Christopher Nolan.
The Tail Job is the debut feature of Bryan Moses and Daniel Millar (co-writer-directors) and Laura Hughes (producer). The crew usually consisted of just the three of them. Hughes is an experienced actress, with credits on 8Mmm Aboriginal Radio, Spirited and Laid, while Moses and Millar have worked together in TV and commercials for years.
Bearing the tagline "If you love someone, set them free, then follow at a safe distance", the micro-budgeted comedy follows Nicholas, who discovers his fiancé Mona has been sending text messages to a mystery man and decides to tail her in a cab.

Festival top brass announced on Monday the 12 Narrative and eight Documentary Feature Film Competition films in 22nd edition, set to run in Park City from January 22-28, 2016.
The 20-strong line-up includes 12 world premieres, three North American premieres and one Us premiere.
All competition films are feature directorial debuts with budgets of less than $1m and without Us distribution.
Jury awards are presented to feature films in both categories and all films are eligible for audience awards as well as the Spirit Of Slamdance Award, judged by the filmmakers themselves.
“The standard of Diy filmmaking around the world is the highest we’ve seen, and the diversity of storytelling is the most we’ve experienced,” sad Slamdance co-founder and president Peter Baxter.
“With a record breaking number of submissions to select from, the narrative and documentary feature line-up has never been so competitive or as exciting to programme.”
