A&E Networks' Roots remake has already found its Alex Haley, and now the mini-series has filled out the rest of its cast. As you might expect from a project spanning more than a hundred years of of American history, it's a large ensemble, including two Oscar winners, veterans of The Good Wife and The Wire, and two newcomers in crucial roles. In the parts of Haley's ancestors, we have: • British actor Malachi Kirby in the pivotal part of Kunta Kinte, played by LeVar Burton in the original. In the Roots book, Kinte was Haley's Gambian ancestor who was brought to America in the Atlantic slave trade, though aspects of this account have been disputed. • The Good Wife's Anika Noni Rose as Kinte's daughter Kizzy, the first member of the family born into slavery. Rose played ambitious prosecutor Wendy Scott-Carr on the legal drama, and voiced Tiana in The Princess and the Frog.

This week in the first Good Wife of 2013, we had some highs and some not-so-highs. There are never really any lows on this show, but let’s be honest; there are Alicia-and-Kalinda-hanging-out-in-a-hotel moments, and then there are not-Alicia-and-Kalinda-hanging-out-in-a-hotel moments.
We also saw the return of some notable secondary characters: Michael J. Fox is back, in a big way, as competing lawyer Louis Canning, who we learn also weirdly has a really sweet and hot wife, and Anika Noni Rose as Wendy Scott-Carr, enemy of pretty much everyone, but right now, Eli. Which in turn, ends up being pretty much everyone. Way to go, Eli!
If you’re ready for some good times, there’s also a small child with West Nile Virus and an old man dying of cancer. Wheeee!
So let’s go ahead and jump into this bowl full of cheeriness.

Going into last night's episode of The Good Wife, we knew one fabulous thing: Nick was gone. For good. He wouldn't be returning with either his school bully snarl or vulgar ice cream parlor antics. He was gone. Phew. Done. Thank God, right?
Well, yes. Except Nick's absence was also the only fabulous thing about last night's episode. In "Boom De Ya Da," Alicia reacquainted with an old nemesis, Diane Lockhart glared at Nathan Lane in over six ways, and Kalinda appeared for a quick minute to show us she was Nick-free Kalinda. Otherwise, the episode was a dull, almost nondescript regurgitation of the firm's familiar woes and Eli's familiar grimaces. I never want to feel sick of Eli's maniacal responses and pointy face. And here I am, mirroring his frown in a sad update of the Harpo-and-Lucy act. Noooooo.
Nonetheless, here are some provocative moments worth revisiting. Let's add 'em up.

I felt like I was watching an Olympic ping-pong match during tonight's The Good Wife.
On "Boom De Ya Da," whether it was the West Nile/foreclosure story, the mediation or the Justice Department investigation, whenever it appeared the situation was going in Lockhart/Gardner's favor, something would occur to shift it back to their opponents.
The main case of the girl getting West Nile disease due to poorly maintained pools at foreclosed properties was quite a timely one. I've seen plenty of bank-owned homes that have fallen into disrepair over the last few years.
Instead of court, the story covered the depositions, negotiations and gamesmanship that occurs before the suit ever hits a courtroom. The back and forth was both exhilarating and exhausting to watch play out. Just when one side seemed to have a winning card to play, the other side would counter with their own move. Did...

CBS will ring in the new year on Sunday with a new episode of The Good Wife Season 4.
An especially dramatic episode of The Good Wife Season 4, we should say, based on the official CBS trailer for "Boom De Ya Da." It teases the removal of Will and Diane as the head of Lockhart/Gardner, as well as the return of Michael J. Fox as Louis Canning and Anika Noni Rose as Wendy Scott-Carr.
All that, and the video doesn't even give us a glimpse at T.R. Knight in the role of a rival campaign manager for Eli.
Watch now and prepare for the return of arguably the best drama on network television:

Anika Noni Rose will retun to her guest-starring role in the CBS legal drama The Good Wife. Rose, a past favorite guest-star of the series, will reprise her role as special prosecutor Wendy Scott-Carr, later this season, TVGuide.com reports. As of this report, Rose is booked for just one episode, but, accordig to series exec producer Robert King. "it could extend to three." Currently you'll find Ms Rose in a recurring role on Private Practice as Taye Diggs' mentally ill sister; as for the big screen, she co-stars in the upcoming film adaptation of Half Of A Yellow Sun. The Good Wife airs Sundays at 9/8c on CBS.

"The Good Wife" is rolling out the welcome mat for returning guest stars in Season 4. According to TV Guide, Dallas Roberts and Ankia Noni Rose will both return to "The Good Wife" Season 4.
Roberts, who plays Owen, Alicia's brother, will return when Stockard Channing makes her "Good Wife" debut as Alicia and Owen's mother. Robert and Michelle King told TV Guide they're trying to get with Roberts and Channing to do more than one episode this season. Meanwhile, Rose is scheduled to return for one episode as Wendy Scott-Carr -- a case brings her back into the fold -- but it could expand to three episodes.
Other Season 4 guest stars include Michael J. Fox, T.R. Knight, Kristin Chenoweth, Maura Tierney, Nathan Lane, Amanda Peet, Miriam Shor and Rita Wilson.

The Good Wife is bringing back a pair of fan favorites.
According to TV Guide, Dallas Roberts - who will also be seen later this year on The Walking Dead - is headed back to the CBS drama in the role of Alicia's outspoken brother Owen.
He's only filmed one episode so far, appearing again when Stockard Channing makes her debut as Alicia's mom.
But co-creator Robert King says he hopes to have both Roberts and Anika Noni Rose back for multiple installments.
The latter, who portrays Wendy Scott-Carr and was last seen getting castigated by Peter after she tried to embarrass Alicia in front of the Grand Jury, will pop up for an upcoming case case.
The actress is currently recurring on the final season of Private Practice as Sam's sibling and will also guest-star on the next week's episode of Elementary.

Spoiler Alert! If you haven’t yet seen tonight’s season finale of The Good Wife stop reading now. We asked creators Robert and Michelle King to dissect the hour, which Robert directed, and tease where we’re headed in season 4.
Entertainment Weekly: Let’s start with Kalinda. She described her sexuality to Alicia as “flexible.” Is it flexible when she needs something, or flexible because she truly enjoys both men and women? What should we believe?
Robert King: I think what you want to believe, anyway, is that she can’t distinguish between enjoyment and need or manipulation,...

Note: The following contains spoilers if you have not seen Season 3, Episode 18 of CBS's "The Good Wife," entitled, "Gloves Come Off."
Alicia Florrick, you mess with my emotions so much ... and that's why I love you and "The Good Wife."
In "Gloves Come Off," Alicia and Lockhart/Gardner took on professional hockey and Michael J. Fox returned as Louis Canning. You know what that means? Lots of cunning and sneaky manipulation. Lockhart/Gardner ended up winning the case, but honestly I don't even care what happened because I'm too excited about the little character moments. You knew it was going to be a good episode because it started with lots of Diane. On the subject of Diane ...

After a few missteps at the beginning of the season, Season Three of CBS' The Good Wife has settled into its groove. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "The Good Wife Gets Back on Track," in which I sit down with the show’s husband-and-wife creators, Robert and Michelle King, and discuss the highs and lows of the season, the Alicia/Kalinda dynamic, the handling of various romances, Will, Cary, Wendy Scott-Carr, Caitlin, renewal prospects, and what’s to come. (Along with much more, including the answer to "What ever happened to Imani?") Coming off of a taut and provocative second season, CBS’s The Good Wife reset itself in many ways when Season 3 began in September: pushing together prim Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies)—who had struggled to remain faithful to her husband, Peter (Chris Noth)—with her boss and former flame, Will Gardner...

So long, Will Gardner?
Not really, of course, we'll be seeing plenty of this character on the weeks ahead. But The Good Wife aired a significant episode on Sunday, one that changed the life of both firm partners. Below, Round Table correspondents Matt Richenthal, Carissa Pavlica and Christine Orlando take on "Live from Damascus."
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: I can narrow it down to an exact moment: Eli's face upon Stacie saying she could still taste him. He was clearly repulsed, but we all know he was also turned on. And probably a bit confused.
Carissa: The opening scene when Cary called Will. I thought the way Cary delivered the message knowing it was right, and yet knowing Will wasn't off the hook, was very well acted. Plus, I have a crush on Matt Czuchry.
Christine: I don't think I had a favorite scene this week.

So, following events on "Live From Damascus," where there's a Will, there's no longer a way to practice law on The Good Wife. At least not for the next six months.
Aside from allowing me to use that incredibly witty pun, though, there's something missing from this Will storyline. It should be a major deal, right? It was treated that way last night, certainly, with Will's future at the firm up in the air, despite Diane's assurance that there will be a place for him again in half a year.
But the punishment hinges on an incident from 15 years ago. We've heard plenty of references to this $45,000 heist and its eventual replacement, but we weren't there for it. We didn't know Will when it went down.
As a result, I can't say I feel particularly invested in the crime or subsequent suspension. There's a feeling of detachment here. We're just...

A big shake up at Lockhart/Gardner has us wondering where "The Good Wife" is going for the next couple months as it works toward the Season 3 finale.
Lockhart/Gardner
Wendy Scott Carr gives Will's $45,000 borrowing case to the Bar Association and they offer him a six-month suspension, which is preferable to disbarring him. It comes at the encouragement of Diane, having pointed out to them the excellent pro bono work the firm does.
Will takes the suspension and leaves the now-named Lockhart & Associates. Six months puts him at roughly when the show returns in the fall, so we wonder just what role Will will play in the show from now until the May finale.

Note: The following contains spoilers if you have not seen Season 3, Episode 15 of CBS's "The Good Wife," entitled, "Live From Damascus."
"The Good Wife" has shoved a potentially big game-changing storyline in the middle of a very busy (and slightly inconsistent) episode.
"Live From Damascus" -- alternate title: "A Night Of Many Stars" -- sets the stage for the next chapter of "The Good Wife" in the matter of a mere 15 minutes. The rest of the hour? Kind of useless when compared to the bigger picture. Rita Wilson (she was deliciously smug), Jonathan Groff, Amy Sedaris, Parker Posey, John Benjamin Hickey, Denis O'Hare and Edward Herrmann all made return appearances in this jam-packed episode of "The Good Wife."
Let's just get through the less interesting stuff first -- and by less interesting, I just mean when compared with the overarching storyline that drives the show. As individual storylines, these two...

Cannot wait for Sunday’s return of The Good Wife. Now that Will Gardner’s legal career seems to be back on track is there any hope at all for a rekindling of his relationship with Alicia? — Brandon
The TV Addict: We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but at what point exactly did it become clear that Will’s professional problems are over? Oh sure, Wendy Scott Carr’s witch-hunt may have wrapped up, but as this Sunday’s episode clearly illustrates, Will isn’t quite out of the woods just yet. What’s more, fans can expect the fiasco that was the failure of Wendy Scott Carr’s investigation to have serious repercussions for both Lockhart Gardner and Peter Florrick’s State Attorney’s Office in terms of personal. Seriously surprising ones that we did not in a million years see coming.
I miss the old Alicia and Kalinda.

Best The Good Wife episode of the season. And it's a good thing, because we're not getting another one until February 19.
Afterellen Bait
The side ponytail of evil, aka Dana, finally got a taste of Kalinda Sharma justice. She asks Kalinda to get her even more inside information, this time implying that Alicia will be prosecuted otherwise. Kalinda agrees, of course, because of Bff love.
Then, during Will's testimony before the grand jury, Wendy Scott-Carr presents copies of incriminating emails between Will and Judge Parks. The emails, however, had been changed — and Will conveniently has the originals. Oops. Apparently, Kalinda slightly revised the copies before she gave them to Dana.
Dana Lodge, you've been served.
Kalinda is waiting outside the courtroom — and somehow she keeps herself from laughing when she sees Dana. "Hit me," Kalinda says. "It'll make you feel better." And like the bitch Dana is, she does exactly that.

On the latest "Good Wife" episode, Wendy Scott Carr gets owned right in the face by Alicia, Kalinda, Will and Peter. It's pretty satisfying.
The State's Attorney's Office
A grand jury is impaneled to decide whether to bring a case against Will. The crux of the issue is that while a typical win rate for a firm is 60%, Lockhart/Gardner has been at 75%. And with the three judges who are suspected of being bribed (Winter, Dunaway and Parks), the win rate has been 95%.
The strategy on Will's side is to turn the testimony towards Peter, as he's the only one who can stop the grand jury from indicting (being the State's Attorney). And if he thinks he's being implicated in wrong-doing, he'll put a stop to it.
The strategy on the side of Wendy Scott Carr is to question the firm about the McDermott case, which Will took over from...

It's now safe to say whenever "The Good Wife" has an episode with the phrase "ham sandwich" in it, it's going to be a stellar offering. Like last year's "Ham Sandwich," Season 3's "Another Ham Sandwich" was filled to the brim with classic moments that make "The Good Wife" one of the most entertaining shows on TV.
When I watched the episode at my desk earlier this week, I warned my colleagues that there would be gasping. Boy, was there gasping. The dancing, the phone calls, the testimony ... everything clicked. There's so much to talk about.
Let's start with Julianna Margulies' pitch-perfect performance when Alicia finds out the grand jury could indict Will. It was like we knew what was happening inside her, her heart falling deep into the pit of her stomach.

Who knew fishing expeditions could have such unwanted consequences?
On the latest installment of The Good Wife, "Another Ham Sandwich," Wendy Scott-Carr chose not to cut bait in the face of overwhelming evidence that her case against Will would not lead to an indictment, while Eli should never have cast his line in the direction of Stacie Hall in the first place.
It was a quality episode, filled with a couple significant developments that should play key roles going forward, but a couple ways in which storylines were wrapped up left me asking: Wtf? What the Fish, of course...
First, there was the quick and tidy way the grand jury arrived at its decision. Who is this Peter person? Really, random grand jury women?!? He was referred to as the State's Attorney every time he was mentioned in testimony; and based on last season's extended election coverage, the show...

The following recap, by the very definition of “recap,” contains spoilers from this week’s episode of The Good Wife.
“You’re excused.”
“We’re done.”
“Thank you for your service; my assistant will validate your parking.”
“Get out of my office.”
No matter how you put it — and Peter found four rather clear reiterations — Wendy Scott-Carr’s job here is over. On Sunday’s episode of CBS’ The Good Wife, titled “Another Ham Sandwich,” the special prosecutor went in for the kill as Will faced the grand jury. And despite a seemingly strong start, she ultimately was outmatched (or,...

A wise man once said, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." In this week's new episode of The Good Wife, that woman is Wendy Scott-Carr. Unfortunately, fury also tends to skew your judgment, as even a scornful prosecutor learns.
You thought I was going to say Alicia was the scorned woman, right? Well, she's apparently done being the victim, as she continues on her journey of empowerment.

"The Good Wife" is in take-no-prisoners mode. In "Another Ham Sandwich," (Sun., Jan. 29 at 9 p.m. Est on CBS), Wendy Scott-Carr's (Anika Noni Rose) investigation into Will Gardner (Josh Charles) comes to a head. It's a big episode of the hit legal drama.
If you'll recall, Season 2's "Ham Sandwich" was a game-changer for "The Good Wife." This year's "Another Ham Sandwich" will definitely leave fans talking, and the episode's events will send ripples through the character's lives.
While we won't reveal all the details -- that is, of course, until the recap Sunday night-- we can offer a tease in the form of five things to look forward to.
Two characters will take their relationship to a new level. It's not who you think.
Alicia's time on the stand is as fiery as the promo leads you to believe. Wendy Scott-Carr and Alicia Florrick have a fierce face-off.

Any scoop on Sunday’s episode of The Good Wife?
The TV Addict: Having recently had the pleasure of sneaking a peek at Sunday’s episode (And yes, we’re well aware how awesome our job can be!) we can assure you that this weekends much-anticipated return of hit CBS series is sooooooo worth the wait. And while we’re not about to spoil the outcome of Wendy Scott-Carr’s increasingly intrusive investigation into Will Gardner’s on court activities, we will alert you to the fact that sparks will fly. Specifically between Alicia and Peter, who have exchange so tense, it would make Jackie blush! Also of note for fans of Archie Panjabi is a confrontation between Kalinda and Monica Raymond’s Dana that gets a little physical. Read into that what you will.

With The Good Wife returning from a brief hiatus this Sunday, our Round Table team of Matt Richenthal, Carissa Pavlica and Christine Orlando is here to take a look back before taking a look forward.
Below, they tackle the episode that posed the question: Who is Mr. Bitcoin?
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: Probably the opening, where Jason Biggs first made an appearance as a seemingly funny, interesting client with a sharp zing of those agents on his tail. What about that door? What if I go through that one? After that, it all went downhill.
Carissa: The end. Honestly, this was one of the most boring episodes ever. I work in commodities and currencies and I didn't give a hoot. Jason Biggs could have been used in a much more exciting manner.
Christine: Definitely seeing Elsbeth set up Wendy Scott Carr to give her...

Finally, The Good Wife gave us a Kalinda-centric episode — sort of. I think we all know that Kalinda is the smartest person at Lockhart-Gardner and seeing her in action is fun. Yeah, yeah — we wish we would see a different kind of action. But smart is sexy. We find pleasure where we can.

If you are a lesbian geek, which so many of us are, this episode's theme was more than enough reason to watch. A conference for cryptographers called Decode-a-con? Awesome. The best part, of course, is that Kalinda attends the con in search of the case-of-the-week's mystery character, "Mr. Bitcoin," creator of a digital currency (a real thing, btw) that the Treasury Department wants to arrest. Geeky stereotypes are everywhere at the con, but Kalinda stops in her tracks at the sight of a tech-head who is decidedly against type (played by The Cape's Jennifer Ferrin...

Note: The following contains spoilers if you have not seen Season 3, Episode 13 of CBS's "The Good Wife," entitled, "Bitcoin For Dummies."
Oh, "The Good Wife." You are a creature of habit. One week -- last week in particular -- you're giving viewers such juicy drama and wonderful character moments and the next, we have "Bitcoin For Dummies," a rather slow, uneventful episode.
Jason Biggs guest-starred as Dylan Stack, the lawyer of the creator of Bitcoin, an online currency the Treasury Department had in its sights. In the end, there was no sole creator -- turned out it was Stack and two others created Bitcoin, something the rascally Kalinda figured out much to the surprise of the three Mr. Bitcoins. It seemed like "The Good Wife" was giving viewers an overly complicated case just because it could. Last week's very simple, straight-forward episode was an elegant work of art, especially when...

The Case of the Week on "The Good Wife" was incredibly interesting, but also - did Kalinda throw Will under the bus to save Alicia?
Case of the Week
Dylan Stack is a man being prosecuted by the U.S. Treasury Department. They want the identity of his client, a person who invented an online currency called Bitcoin because inventing your own currency is illegal. Stack claims attorney-client privilege in not having to reveal his client's identity, so the Treasury Department starts claiming Stack is Mr. Bitcoin.
Kalinda is front and center, as she goes hunting for Mr. Bitcoin herself and is able to demonstrate that the Treasury guys don't actually think Stack is Bitcoin because they are tailing her in the hopes of finding the real identity. It's pretty slick.
And in the end, Kalinda reveals to Stack (and us) that she knows he's behind Bitcoin along with two other cryptographers.

Matt: David Lee confronting Eli Gold. The two most combative partners, mano-a-mano, at each other's throats yet, you could also tell, going at it with a tinge of respect for the other, as well. I loved it.
Christine: It was the bickering between David Lee and Julius. They were like two brothers arguing over the same toy. It was so very funny watching them go at each other.
Carissa: The quick conversation between Alicia and Cary as he got onto the elevator.

Sigh. We barely even saw Kalinda this episode. But this is a good opportunity to refer you to a panel on The Good Wife from this week's New York Times Art & Leisure Weekend, featuring Patricia Cohen interviewing Robert and Michelle King, Julianna Margulies, Josh Charles and Christine Baranski. If you're a fan of Tgw, it's an hour well spent. Apologies for the lateness of this recap, the football game and my forgetfulness had my recording cutting off the last 15 minutes. But anyway, on to "The Good Wife."
Case of the Week
A divorce David Lee worked in Alicia's first year comes back to haunt the firm, as the couple has reconciled and is now suing L/G for alienation of affection (which means they think the firm caused their divorce) and fraud (for selling a company the wife won in the settlement and making more money off the deal than she made.
The equity partners are each on the hook for $1.2 million, since malpractice insurance doesn't cover intentional torts (assault, battery and trespass are common ones; alienation of affection is less common, but is still in the category). Eli Gold is particularly upset about this, since he just became an equity partner like a week ago and he uses...

The Good Wife got right down to business on "Alienation of Affection." All business, all the time.
Indeed, this was my kind of episode, delivering a compelling case, a tight narrative, worthy screen time for all main characters and an absence of some of the silly, soap opera-ish moments that occasionally bogged down the first half of season three. We also got to see David Lee show up at the office like this:
Gone, for this week at least, were any office secrets or prolonged stares between Will and Alicia.
In their place, we had an interesting lawsuit that gathered all the equity partners in one room, allowing for a few fun scenes and arguments, none better than the first-ever meeting between Lee and Eli Gold. Is this a get-to-know you visit or a confrontation, the latter hilarious asked the former, as the two most abrasive personalities at the firm...

CBS Scene from “The Good Wife.”
A breezy episode showcasing the cast at their eccentric best, “Alienation of Affection” gives Diane a chance to flirt again, while putting her designer-heeled foot down to squash growing conflict between partners Eli Gold and David Lee. It also tests the moral fortitude of various Lockhart/Gardner players. Viewers haven’t had this much fun since the partners stood hovering in coats and mittens, plotting outside by the building’s heating duct.

"The Good Wife" started 2012 right with quite an episode: Alicia Florrick almost sunk the entire Lockhart & Gardner ship ... but the year of Cary continued as he saved the day with one fell swoop. Plus, the Emmy-worthy Carrie Preston returned to make audiences every where giggle with delight.
There was no courtroom in "Alienation of Affection," a bold move for a legal drama. It wasn't missed. The past came back to bite the firm in the butt after a couple accuses Lockhart & Gardner of encouraging their divorce for the firm's own financial gain. All of this could be solved ... if only Alicia had filed the proper paperwork. After some shifty maneuvering -- and plenty of Alicia and Kalinda scenes -- the paperwork magically appeared.

When we last left "The Good Wife," Wendy Scott Carr just dropped the bombshell to Will that she's actually investigating Peter and not Lockhart/Gardner, as she is pretending to be. Zap2it spoke with creators Robert and Michelle King about this revelation - and the Kings assure us they have an endgame in mind, but they aren't spilling the beans.
"We always liked the idea of somebody's sins catching up with them," says Robert. "So even though someone could be honestly turning over a new leaf, or at least pretending to turn over a new leaf, you can't get away from the past. Our thing with Peter's past in his first term are there are things he did not necessarily go to jail for that have never been answered for."
The nuance of Peter's position as the State's Attorney is that when does doing favors become corruption.

As much as we enjoy moments of Dalinda, Dana is really a biatch when things don't go her way. In fact, the thing that she and Cary seem to have most in common is their tendency to pout when they're crossed. Kalinda, as usual, keeps her cool anyway — in the sexiest possible way.
Love that smile. Kalinda obviously knows never to trust a woman with a side ponytail — even one who looks hot in a suit. Personally, I think Dana just wants to snap a pair of handcuffs on Kalinda.

The story tightens as the plot thickens in “What Went Wrong,” an episode where Peter and Will separately unveil their inner mafiosi while Alicia continues her bizarre sexual guilt trip but almost makes up with Kalinda (seriously—how can she really forgive a friend who slept with her husband?) and finally finds a (surprising) new pal.
Alicia is daydreaming in court (as, frankly, we tend to do whenever the show heads there) when she gets a call from the headmistress at Capstone Prep School.

We hope you were paying close attention to "What Went Wrong," Facebranch users. Because this social network can create significant problems in one's professional life.
I kid. It was clearly a miniscule part of The Good Wife this week, but for a show that prides itself of being current and being hip - and which referenced Facebook earlier in the episode! - it was a bit distracting to have the featured case solved as a result of... Facebranch.
That legal issue wasn't the only confounding aspect of the 2011 finale. I'm not sure if the show knows what to do with its main character these days.
A week ago, Alicia was panicked over Grace's purported abduction, questioning herself as a mother along the way. Now, thanks to a few words of encouragement from Diane, she's on board as a future partner? She's willing to "focus" and to cut down on her "distractions,...
