He was awarded the Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Honours List for his services to business.
He joined Lloyds Bank in 1952 and was chief executive from 1983 to 1997 and Chairman from 1997 to 2001. He retired from Lloyds in 2001.
He was appointed Chairman of Virgin Money and was an advisor to Morgan Stanley and to the Financial Services Authority.
February 2010, he appeared at the Future of Banking Commission where he criticized the British banks for pushing loans at customers.
