A&E’s reality show Intervention hinges on a classic bait-and-switch: Participants are told they’re being filmed for a documentary about addiction, only to later discover they’re the subject of a well-orchestrated intervention. By the time it was canceled in 2013 after 13 seasons, Intervention’s premise was widely familiar. Its three main interventionists — Ken Seeley, Jeff VanVonderen, and Candy Finnigan, all former addicts themselves — were recognizable to viewers; its opening sequence elicited Pavlovian excitement from its dedicated fans, who made YouTube homages to its most famous subjects and ran online forums where commenters could dissect recent episodes. Last year, in what show creator and former producer Sam Mettler calls a “very rare” occurrence, Lifetime, an affiliate of A&E, purchased new episodes of the show, only for A&E to take it back. A&E premiered the first episode of its 14th season Sunday night. With a now-iconic premise,...

Throughout its 13 seasons over eight years, Intervention has seemed like one of those shows that will just always be around. Every so often it comes in with a new batch of episodes depicting the harrowing journeys of addicts desperate to get clean and their friends and families who suffer in their wake. It led to a spate of imitators and parodies, which only solidifies the place it found in popular culture. But the A&E show is finally calling it quits, with the final five episodes airing Thursdays beginning tonight at 9pm Et/Pt. Candy Finnigan has been with the show [...]

On April 7, Mike Wallace, the lion of the TV news magazine died. Wallace was more than a news man. He was a former actor and game show host who found a way to seamlessly blend news and entertainment into a combination that was far more than a sum of its parts. Wallace -- first on Night Beat, then on 60 Minutes -- didn't just investigate or report. He turned interviewing into a blood sport -- becoming both one of the most liked and feared men on television as a result. He brought the same intensity and enthusiasm to every interview -- be it entertainers, world leaders or criminals -- even once calling Ayatollah Khomeini a lunatic, to his face.
This got him into trouble at times -- settling a lawsuit with General Westmoreland; losing a battle with CBS over a tobacco industry whistleblower -- but it also made him something rare...

Dorothy was once full of promise and vitality, but is now trapped in a downward spiral of self-harming and substance abuse. Can an "Intervention" (Mon., 10 p.m. Est on A&E) save her?
Dorothy agreed to take part in a documentary about addiction, only to find that her worried family was instead staging an intervention. Faced with her relatives and interventionist Candy Finnigan, Dorothy didn't like what she was hearing and decided to leave.
Her half-sister tried to stop her, asking "What can't you do this for me?" but Dorothy just wouldn't stop running away. Her parting shot: "Don't ever talk to me again."
Thankfully, Dorothy was later persuaded to get treatment for her drug and alcohol addictions. She has reportedly been sober since Sept. 14th, 2011

Teenage son Bradley watched his mother Suzon go from a classic modern-day soccer mom to a crack addict selling prescription drugs to afford her next score. She became addicted to crack cocaine only two years prior, and in that time any normalcy in her life has been completely lost. On "Intervention" (Mon., 10 p.m. Est on A&E), he revealed that the situation at home got so difficult for him emotionally, that he attempted suicide a year ago.
Even worse, this incident only sobered his mother for two months before she relapsed back into her addiction. "That couldn't even bring her to her knees, to see her son literally almost dead," he said. If that wasn't her rock bottom, how were they going to possibly help her?
To make matters even more difficult, Suzon's mother holds a lot of resentment toward her daughter. The anger she gets from her mother pushes Suzon's stress levels,...

Penny’s long-standing declaration that it’s the Year of Penny may actually come true in 2012, but I’m going to go ahead and declare this the Episode of Penny. While Zachary Knighton put in a valiant effort to make it the Episode of Dave, this was Casey Wilson’s best Penny outing yet.
After going through another dating disaster, Penny unwisely took advice from functioning lunatic Jane (the relentlessly funny Eliza Coupe) to nab a fixer-upper fellow and change him into an ideal gentleman like she did with Brad. I don’t know which visual I loved more, physical-comedy...
