Update, 9 Am Pt: Derek Chauvin’s attorney laid out a defense that will claim that George Floyd died of a host of other factors than the use of excessive force.
Eric Nelson told jurors that Floyd died of cardiac arrhythmia, which he blamed on preexisting conditions of hypertension and coronary disease as well as his use of methamphetamine and fentanyl. He also cited increased levels of adrenaline.
“Common sense is the application of sound judgment based upon a reasoned analysis, and that’s what this case is ultimately about; it’s about the evidence in this case,” Nelson said.
Nelson also said that Chauvin was “doing exactly what he had been trained to do” in the arrest of Floyd.
Previously: Major broadcast and cable networks carried the opening arguments in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer charged in the death of George Floyd during his arrest in May.

Doug Jones, the former U.S. senator from Alabama, has joined CNN as commentator.
He debuted on Friday on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper, telling the anchor, “Happy to be part of the team.”
Jones, appearing from Birmingham, Al, said that Joe Biden’s administration needed to amplify the message that a Covid-19 relief package was important not just for healthcare but the economy.
Jones, a Democrat, was defeated last year by Republican Tommy Tuberville, after serving in the Senate since 2018. That year, he won an upset victory over Roy Moore. Jones is also a former U.S. attorney for the northern district of Alabama. During his tenure, he prosecuted two Ku Klux Klan members for the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church.
In other news on the pundit front, Fox News hired civil rights attorney Leo Terrell as a contributor on Fox News Channel and Fox Business.

A Sean Hannity panel on the South Carolina shooting death of Walter Scott erupted Thursday, as one guest stormed off set in opposition to another’s statements. “Americans have overreacted,” Jesse Lee Peterson, a black conservative said regarding the Walter Scott shooting, suggesting it is similar to the Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin cases. “I don’t think Americans understand how angry and brainwashed these young black folks are.” “You better come to me or I’m gone…I’m not going to sit here and listen to this hate,” Leo Terrell, civil rights attorney, said to Hannity. Radio host Leo Terrell has engaged in the occasional shoutfest on Sean Hannity's show from time to time, and tonight was only different in that Terrell happened to agree with Hannity for once. Terrell cranked it all the way up to 11 and practically blew up at Juan Williams over the George Zimmerman verdict and his claim that Williams was trying to promote "racial division." Terrell shouted at Williams that the case was decided fairly and compassion, as Williams put it, should not be factored in the decisions of a jury.

Sean Hannity continued the national debate over gun rights tonight with a particular focus on the New York newspaper that published the names and addresses of every gun owner in multiple counties. Guest Leo Terrell was particularly fired up on the issue, and when it looked like he was about to really rage at Hannity, he simply covered his ears with his hands to avoid listening.
