Directors Notes is delighted to present the inaugural edition of the WeAreDn Awards, a celebration of the best films from Dn’s 2023 official submissions. Taking place from 6:30pm on the 25th of April at Whirled Cinema London, the Dn team have selected 22 films over 8 categories – Drama, Comedy, Music, Documentary, Animation, Buckle Up, British & Student – for our industry jury members to vote on. We welcome all nominees, cast, crew, friends and film lovers to join us as we screen the winning films and present the WeAreDn Awards followed by celebratory networking drinks.

It is an irrevocable fact that after a certain age, a woman’s fertility starts to rapidly decline. A pregnancy is deemed ‘geriatric’ after 35 and no matter what decisions you have made in your life, there is an impending internal countdown which can lead to some desolate moments and choices that push the boundaries – one of which is intensely framed in Immaculate Deception by writer/director Emily Lucienne. Her dialogue free five minute short is deeply affecting both in what is not said and what we don’t see. Lucienne was woefully aware of the scarcity of depictions of women’s desperate struggles with wanting a child but not being in the right situation for one reason or another to achieve that goal and wanted to show how a powerful, strong and formidable woman could react when her choices are eroded. What is about Claire that makes two other women so agitated and nervous? To find out, watch About Claire, the new short film from writer/director Tony Ukpo (Random 11 and others). With a simple set-up, sharp moments between the two women (including Emily Lucienne) in a diner, a menacing sound design, and a concise running time of just over 5 minutes, About Claire fits my definition of an effective horror short: evocative and to the point, with a moody hint of its inspiration in character-based, creepy horror movies that were common in the 70s.
