The National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts is honoring three artists at its annual Visibility Awards in D.C. on Wednesday, at an event designed to advance Latino representation in film and television.
Ángel Manuel Soto, director-producer of the Latino superhero movie Blue Beetle, is being recognized with the organization’s Raul Julia Award for Excellence. “Ángel’s work advances the presence of Latinos in film and highlights studies demonstrating that Latino directors are more likely to bring Latino talent to their projects,” the foundation said.
Ramón Rodríguez, recipient of the Spotlight Award, produces and stars in the adaptation of the Karin Slaughter crime novel Will Trent. “Ramón has been a leading voice in continued efforts to open doors for Latino talent in the industry,” the foundation said.
Camila Morrone, honored with the Horizon Award, is starring with Willem Dafoe in Patricia Arquette’s, Gonzo Girl, based on Cheryl Della Pietra’s semi-autobiographical novel,...

Quito (Ecuador), March 22 (Ians) Marco Angulo and Joel Ordonez have been drafted into Ecuador’s squad for friendlies against Australia, the South American country’s football federation said.
Fc Cincinnati midfielder Angulo and Club Brugge defender Ordonez were due to travel to Australia on Tuesday afternoon as head coach Felix Sanchez dealt with a series of late omissions to his squad.
Enner Valencia, Gonzalo Plata, Carlos Gruezo and Jose Hurtado were all cut from Ecuador’s original 24-man list for the friendlies because of injury, a Xinhua report said.
Ecuador and Australia will meet in Sydney on March 24 and in Melbourne four days later.
The matches will be Ecuador’s first under Spanish manager Sanchez, who took charge of the team earlier this month after the December exit of Argentina’s Gustavo Alfaro.

Rio de Janeiro, Nov 8 (Ians) What is a seemingly innocuous World Cup opening phase for the Netherlands promises to be one of trials and tribulations for Senegal, Ecuador and hosts Qatar. While the Oranje are tipped by many to breeze through their first three fixtures, much less is expected of their Group A rivals.
Senegal have not progressed to the knockout rounds since 2002. Ecuador last did it in 2006. Qatar have never done so as they make their first World Cup appearance. The Netherlands will be determined to reassert themselves on football’s biggest stage after their absence from the 2018 tournament in Russia.
Here is a Xinhua’s breakdown of the four teams in Group A, which kicks off on November 20 when Qatar and Ecuador meet in Al Khor.
The Netherlands
Having failed to qualify for the 2016 European Championship and the 2018 World Cup, the Netherlands are back among Europe’s elite.

Felix Sanchez’s men started training at the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha’s Al Sadd Club as preparations for the grand event pick up steam 50 days ahead of the tournament.
Qatar News Agency reported that the training is open to the public on Sunday as part of improving interaction between fans and players ahead of the World Cup that kicks off on November 20.
The Qatari squad will leave on Wednesday for the Spanish city of Marbella where it will join a new camp which will be an extension of the camps that started in June in Spain and then Austria and ended late last month.
Qatar played three friendly matches in the Austrian capital Vienna in September during which coach Sanchez tried out new combination of players including younger members of the squad before choosing the final team that will compete in the World Cup and includes 26 players,...

Man, running is just plain awesome.
I feel like I don’t say that nearly enough — probably because when I’m running, the word “awesome” is the last that comes to mind. “Torture,” maybe. “Pain,” definitely. Never “awesome.” But it really is. Especially when someone else is doing it.
Last night, track and field delivered some really stand-out moments in an Olympics that has largely been dominated by mermen and flying squirrels. (The Olympics are weird.) But for more on all of that, read below for your recap, written — ironically — by one of the least athletic people you’ll ever encounter.

Felix Sanchez won the Dominican Republic's first medal for the London Olympics. The country is widely celebrating its only medal -- and a gold one at that. With the tender memory of Sanchez's grandmother at the forefront, he ran a race worthy of a winner. He and Andrew Taylor have traded off wins in the last four Olympic Games, but this time, it was Sanchez who prevailed, eight years after his previous gold. Taylor wound up in fifth place, not the finish a two-time Olympic gold medalist wants.

It’s amazing what an A-list celebrity can do to a well-meaning child labor bill.
On Thursday, Eva Longoria hit Capitol Hill, where she injected a shot of excitement into the Children’s Act for Responsible Employment, better known as the Care Act.
But Longoria isn’t the only Hispanic celebrity elevating the energy on policy issues in Washington these days. A growing number of politically-engaged Hispanic actors are becoming regular fixtures in the nation’s capital. The likes of actors Jimmy Smits, America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson, George Lopez, Esai Morales, Wilmer Valderamma, and Aimee Garcia -- all of whom have successful careers in Hollywood -- all have active outreach projects that bring them to Washington. They press for a variety of policy issues, but they support each other's projects whenever they can.
The Care Act was originally proposed by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.), and the bill would raise age...
