In the present-day-adjacent time period in the unspecified city where Fingernails unfolds, a newish technology has been embraced by a growing number of couples. Promising “no more uncertainty” and “no more divorce,” the simple but physically daunting test enables people to be sure they’ve found a true love connection. All that’s required is the removal of one fingernail from each participant. There will be blood, yes, but mainly there’s a well-written and beautifully performed investigation of yearning and the mysterious realm that apps and algorithms can only profess to quantify.

Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future and Danis Goulet’s Night Raiders lead nominees for the upcoming Dgc Awards with three each.
The Directors of Guild of Canada unveiled nominations for its 21st Dgc Awards on Nov. 5 on Friday. Del Toro, who shot Nightmare Alley mostly in and around Toronto, did not receive a nomination for best feature film direction.
But del Toro’s tribute to the film noir genre, which starred Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, did earn Oscar-nominated production designer Tamara Deverell a Dgc Awards nod in the same category, Cam McLauchlin a nomination for feature best picture editing, and best sound editing nominations for Nathan Robitaille, Jill Purdy, Dashen Naidoo, Josh Brown, Nelson Ferreira, Kayla Stewart, Craig MacLellan and Kevin Banks.

Geraldine Viswanathan stars as Lucy, a 20-something art gallery assistant. She’s also an emotional hoarder, keeping mementos from her past relationships. When she’s dumped by her latest boyfriend, Lucy is inspired to create the Broken Hearts Gallery.
Director Natalie Krinsky brought her crew in early, including editor Shawn Paper (“Veep”), production designer Zazu Myers and music supervisor Melany Mitchell to flesh out her ideas for the film, “The Broken Hearts Gallery,” in theaters starting Friday.

Over the years, the story evolved, but the essence stayed the same. It was about the feminine gaze — “Lucy is asking the world to love her because of her foibles.”
