Underscore Talent has a new Stem, Learning, and Education division–and, to lead that division, it’s tapped longtime talent manager David Seelos, who is bringing in his roster of top science creators, including Michael Reeves, William Osman, TheBackyardScientist, NileRed, Code Bullet, Emily the Engineer, Tom Stanton, and PeterSripol.
Seelos worked alongside Ian Dokie, founder of Concurrent Studios, to co-found their own management company, End Card Digital, in 2019; they focused on signing creators that “build, educate and entertain.” End Card will “phase out” as Seelos moves his roster to Underscore, and Dokie will shift to other ventures in the creator space, Seelos says.
Seelos also notably worked with Dokie and Osman to build Open Sauce, the content creator-focused Stem convention that expects to bring 150 creators, 500 exhibitors, and 20,000+ attendees to the Cow Palace in San Francisco next month.

Underscore Talent has added several notable names to its roster. The talent management firm, launched in 2021 by the former co-founders of digital network Studio71, has joined forces with creators like Noah Beck and The Herbert Family by bringing on Maxwell Mitcheson as a Partner.
Mitcheson, who is bringing talent manager Mallory Llewellyn to Underscore with him, is the former Head of Creator Management at TalentX Entertainment. TalentX made a name for itself by working alongside the Sway LA creator house, which served as a residence for Beck and other social stars.
Mitcheson arrived at TalentX in 2020 after previously working for bicoastal talent agency A3 Artists. Esports firm ReKTGlobal acquired TalentX in 2021.
By bringing Mitcheson and Llewellyn into its ranks, Underscore will build on a roster that already includes more than 200 creators. Talent managed by the pair includes Beck, The Herbert Family, Instagram beauty guru Foinika Kay of ExteriorGlam, and makeup influencer Mireya Rios.

TheSoul Publishing already counts itself among the leading content producers on the internet. Now, through a talent management company, TheSoul will get a foothold in the creator economy. The Cyprus-based publisher has acquired a majority stake in Underscore Talent, the firm launched in January 2021 by Studio71 co-founders Reza Izad, Dan Weinstein, and Michael Green.
The deal will appoint Izad and Weinstein, who operate as the co-CEOs of Underscore, to the Board of Directors at TheSoul. Two execs from the latter company will also sit on the board at Underscore.
In a statement, TheSoul CEO Arthur Mamedov touted Underscore’s “strategic expertise, best-in-class management team, and significant client roster” as three of the firm’s major assets. He spoke highly of Izad and Weinstein, whose “game-changing” ventures have had a major impact on digital content creation. Studio71 became one of YouTube’s leading multi-channel networks after it was inaugurated in 2013.

Underscore Talent is betting big on Web3. The management company, launched in 2021 by Studio71 Co-Founders Dan Weinstein and Reza Izad, has announced a division called Underscore Labs. Through its new wing, Underscore will utilize a three-pronged approach to assemble a roster of blockchain-based intellectual property.
To head its Web3 Lab, Underscore has hired Brandon Eng, the Co-Founder of Purebase Studio. Eng’s venture, which has launched Nft collections like Lucky Zeros and Minisupers, will be woven into Underscore Labs. “Reza and Dan are at the forefront of digital and media,” Eng said in a statement, “and I am thrilled to partner with them to launch this new venture at the horizon of the next digital frontier.”
Underscore Labs will connect Web3 IP to “top creative talent in media.” Nft projects have evolved into entertainment properties, as evidenced by a recent music video that stars several members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

Gracie’s Corner, the children’s entertainment company behind the popular animated YouTube series of the same name, has signed with UTA and Underscore Talent.
In 2020, the Hollingsworth family — parents and educators Javoris “Jay” Hollingsworth and Arlene Gordon-Hollingsworth and their daughter, Graceyn “Gracie” Hollingsworth — were inspired by the lack of diverse children’s entertainment to create an animated show that featured their daughter and used music and dance to educate young viewers.
Using their in-home studio, Jay and Gracie, now 10 years old, created original songs for the show with an educational bent — “Workout Song” encourages exercise and movement, while “Deep Breath” teaches viewers how to cope with stressful situations — and have produced episodes with lessons about Juneteenth and Black hair.

She has brought two of her former clients to Underscore with her: She will manage the budget-conscious fashion creator Mei Mei Deuanxayasane (Aka MeiMonstaa) as well as body-positive family creator Maleah Whitten. With its latest hire, Underscore Talent is appealing to group of creators who love to get out of the house. The talent management company established by the co-founders of the Studio 71 network has brought on Abe Santos, the former Head of Partner Engagement at YouTube, to lead a new division dedicated to outdoorsy creators.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Santos joined Underscore in July. The former law enforcement officer will manage creators who fall into the “outdoor” category, which covers extreme sports, fishing, and cars, among other topics. Santos will help his charges launch podcasts, establish businesses, and claim opportunities that have not previously been afforded to many outdoor creators. “By bringing Abe into the company, we will be able to provide representation for what has been to date an underserved creator group,” said Underscore Talent Co-Founder Reza Izad in a statement.

A 17-month-old talent management firm has made some major additions to its roster.
Underscore Talent, which already works with top digital creators like CelinaSpookyBoo, Vlad & Niki, and Code Miko, has signed four more prominent videomakers: Beauty star Tati Westbrook, gamer Justaminx, and TikTokers Jeenie Weenie and the Splash Twinz.
Underscore was formed in January 2021 out of a partnership between Reza Izad, Dan Weinstein, and Michael Green. The three execs previously served as three of the co-founders of the digital network Studio71. Though much of Underscore's focus has been on family-oriented creators (it even hired a former Mattel exec as a talent manager last year), its new signees reach a wide range of audiences. In a press release, Underscore noted that Westbrook, who has 12.5 million followers across her social media platforms, is "one of the world’s most-watched beauty reviewers on YouTube by women ages 18-44, with more than 1.5 billion views.

Veteran YouTuber Roman Atwood has joined nascent talent management firm Underscore Talent, formed in January by a trio of former Studio71 executives: Michael Green, Reza Izad, and Dan Weinstein.
Atwood’s family, with whom he frequently vlogs, will also be repped by the firm, as it looks to expand their reach into new formats. Underscore will also work on strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and IP development.
The signing arrives as Atwood has recently returned to creating content on his channel -- which is home to 15.6 million subscribers and over 5.3 billion lifetime views -- after a year-long hiatus. “Reza and Dan have a proven track record with content creators whose careers began on YouTube,” said Sergey Vashketov, CEO of Vlad & Niki’s production company Content Media Group.

Dan Weinstein, the digital media veteran who had a significant hand in building the careers of seminal YouTube stars like Lilly Singh, Rhett & Link, and Hannah Hart, is departing Studio71 -- where he most recently served as co-founder and president -- after a 13-year tenure.
Weinstein is leaving of his own volition, and says his decision preceded the announcement last week that top execs Adam Boorstin and Matt Crowley were being crowned co-CEOs of the multi-channel network, as former CEO Reza Izad ascends to the role of chairman. All of the executive changes, including Weinstein's departure, will become effective Nov. 1.
Weinstein, for his part, tells Tubefilter that he's making the move in order to to return to his entrepreneurial roots.

Studio71 has some brand new leadership at the highest echelons, amid a strategic shift away from its roots as a YouTube-focused multi-channel network into a more all-encompassing digital force.
The company announced today that co-founder and CEO Reza Izad will shift to the role of chairman, with the CEO position being dually filled by top execs Adam Boorstin and Matt Crowley. Boorstin currently serves as Studio71's COO, while Crowley is ascending to the chief executive role from his former position as chief revenue officer. All of the appointments will become effective Nov. 1.
Boorstin arrived at Studio71 in 2015, and was tasked with expanding the company’s business beyond YouTube by forging deals with the likes of Amazon Prime, Roku, and PlutoTV. In recent years, Studio71 says, off-YouTube revenues have more than doubled annually. Boorstin also leads Studio71’s two-year-old podcasting division, which counts over 100 shows that generate 30 million monthly streams.

Studio71, the digital content producer and creator firm, has promoted chief business officer Adam Boorstin to a new role, effective immediately: COO.
Boorstin will continue to report directly to Studio71 CEO Reza Izad, but in an expanded capacity that will see him assume responsibility for day-to-day operations and growth strategy.
Formerly, as chief business officer, Boorstin oversaw Studio71’s acquisition of over 50 Ott apps from Unreel Entertainment, giving it a combined network of more than 200 owned-and-operated platforms. He also commissioned Adulting With Emma Chamberlain at Snapchat and The Real Bros Of Simi Valley -- starring Jimmy Tatro -- at Facebook Watch. Boorstin is also credited with launching Studio71’s podcast business, which comprises more than 70 shows that generate 18 million monthly streams. This year, Studio71 says it will continue to grow its portfolio of streaming apps, YouTube channels, Facebook pages, and podcasts in a bid to drive ad revenues.

Veteran ProSiebenSat.1 exec Jan Frouman is leaving his post as Chairman and CEO of Red Arrow Studios, and as a member of the ProSieben executive board. He will step down from both roles when his current contract concludes at the end of February. Frouman will be succeeded by James Baker, who has been appointed President & COO of Red Arrow Studios, the global production network of ProSiebenSat.1 that counts 20 international production companies and has such credits as Bosch and Married At First Sight. Baker, who is currently COO of Red Arrow Studios, will report directly to Max Conze, CEO of ProSiebenSat.1 Media Se.
The shifts come at a time of some change for the group. Earlier this month, Henrik Pabst left his post as President of distributor Red Arrow Studios International after being promoted to the newly-created role of Chief Commercial Officer at ProSiebenSat.1’s entertainment segment. Jan Frouman will exit Red Arrow Studios early next year and step down from the board of its parent company, the German media giant and broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1.
Frouman will depart production and distribution group Red Arrow at the end of February when his current contract expires. At that point James Baker will move up from COO to take the helm. He will report directly to Max Conze, CEO of ProSiebenSat.1.

In the wild and woolly world of short-form digital video, Studio71 would seem to be well-situated: a roster of well-known influencer talent from Lily Singh to the Fine Bros. generate 9.5 billion views via the 40,000 content pieces generated across platforms each month.
But in this week’s episode of the Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Studio71 CEO Reza Izad is candid about navigating an ecosystem that has been reeling from one challenge to the next, from the brand safety issues that left marketers skittish to the disappearance of content buyers his company counted on for licensing revenues.
“What we’ve seen in the last year is a shrinkage of that market,” said Izad. “When Go90 goes out of business and SeeSo and Watchable—and there’s a much longer list than that—you get contraction.”
Difficult market conditions has forced Studio71 to be nimble about exploring new business opportunities, from an innovative...

Studio71 wants to mine podcasts for more ad dollars by extending the reach of its stable of YouTube content creators into a new medium.
Over the past two months, the digital-media company has launched 11 podcasts with creator partners. Those include “Fanboi with Harley Morenstein,” featuring Morenstein (pictured above), the host and creator of Epic Meal Time. Morenstein’s podcast launched last week and hit the top five podcasts on iTunes for the Games and Hobbies category. Other include “Kayln’s Coffee Talk,” “Don’t Mess with Christine Sydelko,” and “Sh*t They Don’t Tell You” with Nikki Limo and Steve Greene.
The opportunity for Studio71 is to take digital influencers and deliver ad-supported audio-content for millennial and Gen Z audiences (18-34), said CEO Reza Izad. Podcast audiences historically have skewed older than that younger demo.

Exclusive: Digital media company Studio71 is suing a San Francisco startup that sought its content to power a mobile application to teach English to Chinese millennials, but never paid the $1 million deposit. The suit (read it here), filed this week in Los Angeles Superior Court, maintains that the startup, Say Say K, delivered two months worth of “stories, lies and excuses,” but not the seven-figure deposit it promised Studio71.
Studio 71, a firm co-founded by YouTube star manager Reza Izad, is seeking damages of $5.5 million.
“Intentionally breaching an agreement is not only morally reprehensible but legally actionable,” said Bryan Freedman, the attorney representing Studio71. “Say Say K had no intention to pay under the agreement with Studio71 and for that, it will endure a painful legal result.”
According to the suit, Ssk’s chief content officer Shaun Newcomer approached Studio71 last fall to talk about licensing content for the mobile learning app Lyngo.
