As we mentioned a number of times recently, the relatively new trend of anime not being based on manga is truly picking up, as it includes many great titles, as in the case of “Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song” and “ID: Invaded”, among others. Studio Mappa’s “Zombie Land Saga” is another of those titles, especially in the way it combines the concept of idols with drama and comedy.

Ten years later, Sakura, along with six “legendary” girls from various eras of Japan’s history, are brought back as zombies by a man named Kotaro Tatsumi, who seeks to revitalize Saga Prefecture by putting together an all-zombie idol group that would become eventually become known as Franchouchou.

For anyone new to the all-conquering cross-media juggernaut that is Eiichiro Oda's One Piece, its tenth feature length animated spin-off could seem like the greatest thing ever. It's hard not to enjoy One Piece, at least a little bit. Strong World encapsulates everything fun about the franchise - the cheerful spirit of wonder to it, with super-powered pirates chasing adventure across an endlessly inventive, wonderfully expressive technicolor fantasy world.
But the film is basically telling the exact same story both the numerous print volumes and several hundred episodes of the television series have told countless times already, and for those growing a little tired of shonen (think 'boy's own') manga and its refusal to do anything different the movie could well come over as frustratingly hollow.
Strong World sees yet another new villain pop up to plague Oda's nautical universe, the villainous captain Shiki (Naoto Takenaka hamming it up...

Paris -- The Annecy International Animation Film Festival will blow out its 50th birthday candles this year with a different toon thanks to a colorful slate of all-star guests, including Jeffrey Katzenberg, Matt Groening and Ari Folman, plus several international film premieres and professional conferences, organizers confirmed Monday. The fest kicked off Monday.
Folman will head the Feature Film Jury, which will vote on competition titles from across the globe -- this year with a particularly Asian flare. Titles include Wes Anderson's "Fantastic Mr. Fox," Tarik Saleh's "Metropia," Dominique Montery's "Kerity la maison des contes," Liu Jian's "Piercing 1," Mamoru Hosoda's "Summer Wars," Munehisa Sakai's "One Piece Film: Strong World" and Jean-Christophe Roger's "Allez raconte!"
This year's official selection will showcase 213 films in competition including features, short films, TV movies, educational programming, commercials, music videos and student films.
