I like this… a brand new series from BBC’s program, The Strand, called Read My Country; in short, writers from all over the world are asked to offer a “literary guide” to their country and culture, by naming 3 books they would consider “essential reading” for anyone on the outside wanting to understand each writer’s homeland.
Nigeria is first, and Nigerian novelist/poet Helon Habila, a Commonwealth Writers Prize winner, offers his choices, which you can listen to below. I’ve read all 3 (although, it’s been ages since I last did, and really should read them again). You should, if you haven’t already.
