Spyglass Media Group has made its first big creative hire, bringing in Lauren Whitney as president of television. She will begin April 1.
Spyglass Media Group is the joint venture between Gary Barber’s Spyglass and Lantern Entertainment. In July 2018, Lantern acquired the assets of The Weinstein Company out of bankruptcy for $289 million. It walked away with three unreleased films after haggling with filmmakers and producers over the rights to several of the projects, and a library of content.
In this role, Whitney is charged with overseeing television development and production for broadcast, cable and Ott services, and invigorating the company’s IP and library titles. She was most recently in the same role at Miramax. Prior to that, Whitney was the president of Scripted Television at Legendary Entertainment and was a TV agent at Wme before that.

Spyglass Media Group, launched this month by former MGM boss Gary Barber and Lantern Entertainment, has laid off 15 workers due to the shutdown of the company’s New York office. A company insider confirmed reports of the reductions Wednesday, saying it was a shift designed to maximize the efficiency of workers at the company’s Century City base, where new executives are already joining the roster.
The exit from New York has symbolic importance because Lantern brought to Spyglass the 250-plus titles from The Weinstein Company, which the private equity firm acquired last year for $289 million in a bankruptcy proceeding. Few entertainment companies have ever been more tightly woven into the fabric of New York than TWC, whose offices in Tribeca (and those of predecessor Miramax Films) became a center of gravity in the film and media business over decades. That all came to a crashing end in fall 2017, when...

Gary Barber’s Spyglass Media Group has shuttered the New York offices of Lantern Entertainment and laid off 15 people in all divisions of what had been The Weinstein Company.
The New York office was closed to streamline operations out of the company’s Los Angeles headquarters, according to a spokesperson for Spyglass Media Group, which this month announced a partnership through which Barber’s Spyglass will own and control all of Lantern Entertainment’s current assets — including the remnants of The Weinstein Company that Texas-based Lantern Capital acquired in bankruptcy last July for $289 million.
Spyglass Media Group, in which Lantern is also a majority investor, is primarily focused on developing, producing, financing and acquiring premium content worldwide for theatrical, network, cable and streaming platforms.
