In 2014 he was awarded a starting grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for his Cambodian Archaeological Lidar Initiative and moved his research to France.
Received his Doctorate in Archaeology from the University of Melbourne. His PhD research produced a comprehensive map of Angkor in Cambodia based on aerial photographs, survey and remote sensing technology.
Co-founded the Greater Angkor Project.
From 2007 to 2015 he was the founding director of the University of Sydney's Overseas Research Centre at Siem Reap-Angkor.
