World No. 48 Pedro Martinez was an Olympics hopeful, but his dream of representing his county in Paris in late July will be unfulfilled, and he's not happy about it.
The Olympic tennis tournament is scheduled to kick off on July 27th, where 64 men will compete in the singles tournament to win gold, silver, and bronze medals. The top 56 players, based on the ranking of June 10th, will automatically qualify for the draw.
One of those who aspired to get a spot in the Olympics was Pedro Martinez, who worked painstakingly to get his ranking inside the Top 50. Although he has met this requirement, another criterion is based on the maximum number of participants per country.
This is restricted to the four best-ranked players in the Top 56 for one nation. Martinez is currently the third-best-ranked Spaniard in the Atp rankings behind World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
However, because...

Rafael Nadal will return to tennis in about a week, and former Atp player Tim Henman believes it's to try and win Grand Slams.
Rafael Nadal spent much of 2023 on the sidelines after injuring himself during the Australian Open in January. He was playing against Mackenzie McDonald when he injured his hip.
Instead of retiring immediately, Nadal toughened it out as the defending champion and lost standing up. That was likely a mistake, as his hip injury proved worse than initially thought.
He underwent surgery a few months later after conservative approaches failed and has since then been out. The return is nearing in Brisbane, and many wonder what to expect from Nadal.
He's not young anymore; he's missed an entire year of action and is returning from a tough injury and complicated surgery. It's unlikely he'll dominate immediately, according to many, but Tim Henman thinks he'll get there eventually,...

Rafael Nadal returns to tennis in less than ten days, and fellow Atp colleague Andrey Rublev could see him challenge for Grand Slams again.
While it might have seemed impossible a few months ago, it's finally happening. Rafael Nadal is returning to tennis, and many people are curious about how it will go. Some expect him to completely bomb, while others expect him to be competitive.
According to those who actually stood with him on a tennis court recently, Nadal is playing well enough to be competitive, but we'll see what happens. The comeback isn't happening for him only to be part of the Tour.
He's coming back with the intention of winning events, especially Grand Slams, and Andrey Rublev certainly thinks it could happen. He talked about Nadal with The National News.
We don’t know yet [where his level will be at], but how many times people would say, not just about Rafa, about all those three players,...

Rafael Nadal is coming back to tennis, and he has some goals, but former Atp player Fabrice Santoro doesn't see him winning Roland Garros.
Rafael Nadal was never going to come back to tennis just to do a retirement Tour. The Spaniard is a very competitive player and is coming back to compete. Whether he'll be strong enough to compete for trophies remains to be seen, as Nadal is also skeptical about it.
To former player Fabrice Santoro, it looks like a fever dream. He's not the only one who expressed skepticism about Nadal winning Grand Slams. Famous coach Rick Macci doesn't believe that Nadal will be strong enough to challenge for the four majors, and to Santoro, who spoke to L'Equipe, it seems the same way.
If he wins Roland Garros, that’s superhuman, once again. But if he doesn’t win many matches, it’s anecdotal. When he comes back,...

This distinction is meant to recognize and celebrate the players who made a lasting imprint on the Itf World Tennis Tour during the season and are destined to achieve even bigger and better things in the upcoming season.
Andreeva was nominated alongside compatriot Alina Korneeva (who defeated her in the 2023 Australian Open Junior girl's final), Roland Garros boy's singles champion Dino Prizmic, 19-year-old Henrique Rocha, and Marina Stakusic, who was part of the Canada team that won the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup.

It's a December to remember and we're only just one day in, following news that Rafael Nadal will mark his tennis return at next month's Brisbane International.
Nadal's tournament participation at the Atp 250 event comes exactly a year since his last outing which was at the 2023 Australian Open. There, the legendary Spaniard injured his hip flexor and needed to undergo a complicated operation in early June.
Thankfully for Nadal, the surgery was successful. But he had to sacrifice his entire season for the sake of his health. After missing the entire tennis schedule after leaving Melbourne, including his beloved Roland Garros, Nadal embarked on intense practice sessions with one eye for next year's Australian Open.
His return to tennis was announced unofficially by Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley who had been in touch with the Spaniard during his rehabilitation period. Although Nadal's management team distanced itself from such confirmation,...

The 2024 season will different because the Olympics are played, and many players, like Iga Swiatek, are shifting focus to that.
In the case of Swiatek, it's quite a natural thing. She's the best player in the world after finishing the year with the Wta Finals trophy and the number one ranking. She's been the dominant force in women's tennis for two years now, so it's only natural to see the Olympics as a reasonable goal.
Another positive for Swiatek in her pursuit of a gold medal is Roland Garros being the venue for the event. She's been utterly spectacular at the event, winning it three times so far in her career. She won it this year and last year and largely did so without having too many issues.
Clay is her best surface because it plays well into her ball-striking ability as well as movement. With her amazing track record in Paris,...

Rafael Nadal might or might not play at the upcoming Australian Open, but fellow former world no. 1 Andy Roddick thinks that his recent comments show a lot of promise.
The whole saga about Nadal playing at the Australian Open or not started when Craig Tiley said that the Spaniard would make an appearance, supposedly trying to drive the sales of tickets.
The Spaniard then came out and corrected Tiley, admitting that he doesn't know whether he will play. Then another comment by the Spaniard made it seem like he would, though he didn't confirm it would be in Melbourne.
Let's also not forget that his uncle, Toni Nadal, said that he expects Rafa to be ready for the Australian Open. Now, it's a situation where different sides claim different things, but according to Roddick, the outcome is most likely positive.
He spoke about Nadal in his latest column for Betway,...

We're inching closer to Rafael Nadal 's return, and Patrick Mouratoglou expects a good version of him, one that will challenge for titles.
Rafael Nadal recently gave a pretty long interview where he talked about several things. One of those things was his comeback, which is looming and will likely happen in less than three months. The 2024 Australian Open was always talked about as the goal for Nadal, and it's not that far away anymore.
In the same interview, Nadal played down expectations about his return as he's unsure of what type of condition he'll be. He might not be good enough to challenge for titles but tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou expects him to be fine.
The Frenchman doesn't see Nadal coming back solely to say goodbye to the sports but rather play to challenge for titles. It's just how he's wired.

Former Atp No. 1 Rafael Nadal suffered a massive ranking fall following the conclusion of the 2023 US Open, dropping outside the world's Top 200 for the first time in 21 years.
The Spanish legend hasn't played on the Atp Tour since a meek, second-round defeat to Mackenzie McDonald at this year's Australian Open. After that match, Nadal confirmed that he suffered a hip injury from that match and was expected to miss up to eight weeks .
In March the Spanish lefty exited the world's Top 10 for the first time since 2005 , having accumulated an astonishing 912 weeks inside that exclusive band. One of the most remarkable tennis feats that defined Rafael Nadal's career as the benchmark for longevity and dedication.
However, even for a player who had previously turned back time, it looked like he was running out of it. Weeks of no competition gradually turned into months, with Nadal declaring a spate of withdrawals...

Aryna Sabalenka is officially the Wta 's top-ranked player, earning Iga Swiatek 's 75-week dominance in the latest Wta rankings.
Sabalenka rises to World No. 1 for the first time in her career after a run to her first US Open final. Swiatek's fourth-round exit aided her cause, meaning Sabalenka only needed to match the Pole's result to ascend to top spot.
Sabalenka with 9,266 points is clear of second-placed Swiatek by 1,071 points ahead of the busiest part of the regular tennis season. It is the first time the No. 1 ranking has changed hands since Swiatek took over from Ashleigh Barty at the start of April last year. Sabalenka is the second Belarusian player (after Victoria Azarenka) to become No. 1.

Rafael Nadal recently had surgery in Barcelona and now, he was there for a couple of medical checkups.
Rafael Nadal generally spends most of his time back home in Mallorca . But the Spaniard usually seeks medical help from specialists in Barcelona, a city he's very familiar with and one with many notable medical specialists.
He's been away from the sport for months after injuring his hip at the 2023 Australian Open. He held out hope of returning by the time Roland Garros came around, but it didn't happen as the injury required surgical intervention.
The whole reason he pushed it back was the hope that he could recover without going under the knife. Ultimately, it didn't work, so Nadal underwent surgery right around when Roland Garros was played. He's been recovering since then, though not many details are known, even though he has provided updates.

Carlos Alcaraz is back in Canada with the hopes of having a better result at the Canadian Open this year compared to last year's early exit.
Last year's expedition in Montreal didn't go that well for Alcaraz who was beaten by Tommy Paul comfortably. It was an early exit for the Spaniard which is always disappointing but his admission was even more troublesome. He said that he was overwhelmed by the pressure which was one of the first times he publicly admitted that.
Like many times in his career so far, Alcaraz dealt with it well playing superb tennis a few weeks later to win the US Open . He did the same thing by shaking off a poor Roland Garros finish this year to win Wimbledon. That newfound experience should help him to turn things around in Toronto as well.
I remember that I [did] not [have] a good run last year in Canada.

Gael Monfils made a return at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown event in Los Angeles, and he was quite happy with the way it went.
The French player hasn't played since Roland Garros, where he played one spectacular match before pulling out. Monfils missing the grass season is nothing major, as it has been the case for many years. He was never that good on it either so focusing on the hard court season certainly makes sense.
Speaking after the Uts in Los Angeles, Monfils admitted to being happy with how things went as he now shifts focus to the Atlanta Open . Being back on the court healthy and competing on the Atp Tour is all he wanted, and it's a great feeling.
I was quite happy. I was hitting a strong ball. The backhand is so much better. That was a huge question mark before I came. Even today, I was smashing the backhand.

Scheduling has been an issue this year at multiple events and Wimbledon is not escaping controversy after their own questionable choices.
There has been a lot of talk in tennis circles this year after some questionable scheduling choices were made at several events. Roland Garros didn't escape it and neither did the Italian Open . Madrid Open dealt with that controversy for a few years after enforcing several hours between the semi-final matches only to fix it this year.

Even more, were cancelled later that day with over 60 round one matches remaining to be played as of noon local time.

Daria Kasatkina received a rather warm welcome upon her return to the United Kingdom and she was very happy about that.
As a Russian, Daria Kasatkina was barred from playing at any tennis events in the UK last year missing Wimbledon. It was a decision she came to terms with rather quickly explaining that she understands and accepts it. She expressed that some things are simply more important than tennis which ultimately is true.
This year marked the return of Russians to the UK and Kasatkina in particular was rather warmly welcomed. She's been quite outspoken, probably the most outspoken alongside Rublev against the war in Ukraine. The universe conspired to have her first match back against a Ukranian, Anhelina Kalinina.
It was an easy win for the Russian who respected the Ukrainian player's position to not shake hands with Russians though we didn't see the crowd boo because of that.

Not many expected him to become as good as he did so suddenly with the 2022 season becoming his major breakthrough. The first part of the year was dominated by Rafael Nadal and everything he did, however, the latter part belonged to Alcaraz.

Novak Djokovic returned to practice ahead of his Wimbledon title defence but he was spotted sporting an elbow brace once again.
Djokovic dealt with an elbow injury for much of the clay season as he was seen playing with it more than once. The Serbian eventually ditched it for Roland Garros and it worked out as he managed to win the event.
He refused to talk about his elbow during the event joking that he doesn't want to give his opponents any ideas so it's tough to confirm whether he did have an injury during Roland Garros or not .
We might have a better idea now as the Serbian posted videos from his return to practice with the final one showing him with a brace. Now there is a chance that the brace is there only as a precaution and there is a chance that it truly is an injury.

Sebastian Korda is very confident about his grass prowess as he aims to improve upon a career-best 4th round at Wimbledon .
Korda hasn't played that much tennis this year, competing in only 16 matches on the Atp Tour, though he was pretty good when he did. Roland Garros wasn't a good experience as struggled to find his rhythm on clay this year losing three of the four matches he played.
Grass has looked much better for him generally and this year. He's 8-4 on the surface in his career with a couple of those coming this year at the Cinch Championships . A win over Dan Evans in the first round and a win over the in-form Frances Tiafoe who triumphed in Stuttgart recently prove his comfortability on the surface.

Iga Swiatek 's achievements over the last three years have impressed many onlookers, but Andy Roddick feels the Wta world number one does not always get the credit she deserves.
Swiatek lifted her fourth career Grand Slam and third Roland Garros title with a three-set final win against Karolina Muchova . In addition, the Polish player recently became the longest-serving world number one amongst active players as she held the top spot for 64 weeks.
Despite her long-term success at the age of 22, Roddick believes the end of the 'Big Three' era and Serena Williams' much-followed retirement have taken the shine off Swiatek's accolades. When speaking to MSNBC, Roddick sympathised with Swiatek as he believes her progress is being lost in the current context of tennis.
"She's phenomenal, won four Slams now. Kind of in the tornado of the Big-3 and Serena [Williams] retiring, this storyline is getting lost a little bit. She...

Novak Djokovic is different than other players and maybe also because of that he's the only man with 23 Grand Slam titles.
His latest triumph came at the 'strange' 2023 Roland Garros which was played without the 14-time champion Rafael Nadal . But even without his biggest rival, Djokovic was able to produce an extraordinary level and lift the title .
Shortly after his triumph, the Serb travelled to Portugal where he enjoyed a quick vacation , and once he managed to soak the success in, the newly crowned 23-time Grand Slam champion reflected on the triumph on his Instagram account.
"Reflecting on magical #23 Grand Slam tittle 7 days ago at Roland Garros. I had most wonderful time with my team and family. It was a hard fought battle during several weeks but victory is sweeter when you know you left everything possible on the court."
Djokovic wanted to show his gratitude toward people that helped him along the way.

Alexander Zverev will make his grass season debut at the 2023 Halle Open , and he'll make it as a seeded player thanks to withdrawals.
Alexander Zverev initially planned to make his start on grass last week in Stuttgart but the German opted to withdraw from that event due to a minor injury suffered at Roland Garros . His return to grass will happen this week at the Halle Open where he will now be a seeded player thanks to the withdrawal of Felix Auger-Aliassime .
It's a good break to have for Zverev in terms of the draw generally but the first-round match won't be easy. He'll face his good friend Dominic Thiem, who defeated him in his only Grand Slam final so far. It's going be an interesting match for Zverev as Halle should favour his style of tennis, though, the grass has been somewhat of a shaky surface for him in the past.

Nadal played for Spain in the Davis Cup leading them to the trophy in the past. Playing in the red kit was always very meaningful for Nadal who wore it proudly. He played even better which is why the nation is one of the more successful ones in the competition in the past two decades.
When he announced his Roland Garros withdrawal, Nadal mentioned the Davis Cup in December as a possible testing ground for a return. The event would be coming two months before the Australian Open so it sounds like a decent plan. Iga Swiatek became world number one on April 4th, 2022, and she's yet to lose that ranking being number one after Roland Garros as well.
Becoming world number one was certainly a dream for Swiatek, one she thought impossible for quite a while. It finally happened last year and it was deserved, even though Ashleigh Barty's retirement made it a bit easier. She took it with her own merit winning multiple events in the early stages of 2022 confirming that rank by winning two grand slams later as well.
She's still the number one successfully defending her rank at Roland Garros . It wasn't something she was paying attention to very much wanting to win the trophy first and foremost. By doing that she remained the number one player in the world.

Roland Garros ' scheduling was a talking point for the second year in a row which left tournament director Amelie Mauremo having to defend it.
Mauresmo defended the scheduling last year as well but stumbled a bit while choosing her words making it seem like she suggested that men's matches are simply more interesting than women's matches.
Generally speaking, men's matches do tend to fill out stands more even if the tickets are more expensive. As a premier slot, the night slot generally looked to maximize the most out of it by scheduling men's matches once again.
Wta Council member Jessica Pegula spoke about it in her colum n for BBC Sport and Mauresmo once again spoke on the topic following the conclusion of the event.

Due to the default, Kato was forced to forfeit all of her prize money earned which was a major hit for a player who hasn't earned a lot in her career so far. It was a controversial decision that split the tennis community with many like Navratilova arguing that the decision was ridiculous .

British tennis suffered yet another blow as Jack Draper was forced to withdraw from the 2023 Wimbledon Championships.
Already without British No. 1, Emma Raducanu , in the Wta draw, the 2023 Wimbledon Championships will be played also without the third-highest ranked British player on the Atp Tour, Jack Draper.

However, the unfortunate French Open incident, which only allowed him to last 11 games before succumbing to the injury, has added another entry to his growing list of injury-induced retirements.

Carlos Alcaraz is currently world number one on the Atp Tour and he can retain that spot even if he loses to Novak Djokovic .
The battle for the number one rank in tennis was a storyline that didn't get much attention during this Grand Slam. Obviously, the main prize in Paris is the Roland Garros trophy but before the event, we had a situation where four players could end up as number one .
The list of players who can be number one is shorter now but that's normal as there are only a few days of the event left. The match everybody is looking forward to is Novak Djokovic taking on Carlos Alcaraz . It's a match that could determine who is number one at the end of it and more generally history is at stake .
Neither Djokovic nor Alcaraz are probably thinking about it but it's certainly something they would want to achieve as well.

Novak Djokovic is a very patriotic man and he's never hidden his love for his country and his people which is why he sent a message after his win at Roland Garros.
Djokovic got his Roland Garros campaign underway with a solid win over Aleksandar Kovacevic. The Serbian needed only 3 sets and a bit over two hours to get it done with an interesting camera message following the win.
Djokovic used the opportunity to send love to Serbs living in Kosovo after the northern part of the country experienced unrest in recent days. It's a very political statement from Djokovic even if there have been opinions that sports and politics shouldn't mix.
Some would argue that sports and politics should be separate while the reality is that they never were. Politics in tennis has been a topic for a while now with the war in Ukraine and Ukranian players keeping it a topic by choice.

Iga Swiatek enters Roland Garros as the number one player in the world and the first favourite to lift the trophy.
The Polish player has proven herself for basically a year now to be the best player in the world. She posted a 70-10 record last year which is bonkers and certainly not going to be replicated this year. For now, it's 28-6 which is still really good but it's clear that her level dropped off since then.
When you add the rises of Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina in recent months you arrive at the possibility of her losing her number one rank. It's not something she thinks about or is worried about but it's still a possibility to happen.
It makes this Roland Garros particularly interesting especially when you have players like Krejcikova determined to challenge the tennis order that saw Sabalenka, Swiatek and Rybakina dominate the season so far.

Roland Garros rolled out an app this year to protect tennis players from social media abuse and Iga Swiatek will use it.
Social media is something most public figures experience at one point in their lives. Tennis players are no exception as many have talked about dealing with it over the course of their career. Leylah Fernandez spoke about it as did many others.
Some handle it well like Coco Gauff who doesn't care but oftentimes it goes too far. Even people associated with players can feel it as Berrettini's girlfriend recently spoke about the abuse she got since getting together with him.
Roland Garros elected to do something about that this year teaming up with tech company Bodyguard.ai to monitor the player's account and protect them from social media. It's an initiative that got a lot of praise as it's long overdue.

Carlos Alcaraz wished that he was a teenager a bit longer to get some more records after he turned 20 on Friday.
Alcaraz has been one of the most impressive teenagers in tennis in a long time and in his final match as a teen he defeated Karen Khachanov in Madrid. The Spaniard established himself as a complete player with no weaknesses early on, something that many in the tennis circles both recognized and highlighted.
Due to breaking out at a young age, Alcaraz was able to hit some incredible milestones such as becoming the youngest number one ever and he would not have minded staying a teenager for a bit longer to create some more records.

"I've always had, I think, a good, kind of dry sense of humour. But it's fun, I think that people see those moments as just maybe myself. I didn't think I'd get as...

Elena Rybakina keeps on winning as she sent her nation to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals on Saturday however she's also aiming to extend her winning to more Grand Slams.
The year began well in that regard as Rybakina made her way to the Australian Open final where she faced Aryna Sabalenka. It was a competitive match where both players won a set but it was Sabalenka who won the second one to lift the trophy.
The 100 % winning percentage in Grand Slam finals for Rybakina was gone but she's eager to make a few more finals in the future and add more trophies to the Wimbledon that she won last year. It's been a whirlwind year for her in the past 365 days and she's yet to fully grasp everything that happened as the life of a tennis player has a very quick pace.

Andy Roddick is less optimistic about the chances of Rafael Nadal this year if the stories about his injury rehabilitation are true.
There is a lot of speculation that Nadal will probably withdraw from the Madrid Open after he withdrew from the Barcelona Open. It comes due to the Spaniard still not being fit enough to play competitive tennis and it's not good news with Roland Garros inching closer and closer.
Working as an analyst on the Tennis Channel Roddick admitted that the news coming out of Spain could be concerning because hip injuries are not your common injuries. It takes a lot of time to properly recover and you're always at a risk of injuring yourself again.
Yeah, it very well could be. Listen, did any of us think he was going to sneak two slams in last year, be healthy, and play a solid amount of tennis through the first seven months?...

New Delhi, April 11 (Ians) As Novak Djokovic set to make his competitive return in Monte Carlo after a month-long break, the world no 1 has said that he wants to “peak in Paris” as Roland Garros is his ultimate goal on the clay.
Djokovic had a stunning start to the 2023 season, winning in Adelaide, claiming the Australian Open title and reaching the semifinals in Dubai.
The World No. 1 has not competed since he reached the semifinals in Dubai in early March as he was forced to miss the Sunshine swing — Indian Wells and Miami Open — both Atp 1000 masters events, after he was denied entry to the United States over his vaccination status.
“I have to say, it’s in the back of my mind, as an ultimate goal on clay. I really want to be able to build my form so I can peak in Paris,” Djokovic told Eurosport.
“It’s still a long way.

Monte Carlo, April 11 (Ians) Former World No. 3 Austria’s Dominic Thiem trounced Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-4 at the Monte-Carlo Masters opening round to earn his first win at an Atp Masters 1000 event since 2021.
Thiem produced a clean-hitting performance against Gasquet to triumph after one hour and 29 minutes on Monday. The Austrian had lost his past five matches at this level, having defeated Marton Fucsovics in Rome in May 2021 prior to his wrist injury.
The 29-year old moved well throughout the clash and opened his shoulders to strike 18 winners. He now leads Gasquet 3-2 in their Atp Head-to-Head series, having won their past three meetings.
“At the start I played very well. It was good for me that I broke him. I was going ahead the whole match. I am pleased with the performance. Richard is in good form, he already won a tournament this year. It is always tough...

Prolific documentarian Alex Gibney hates liars. He hates when companies lie (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room); he hates when religions lie (Going Clear, Mea Maxima Culpa); he hates when authority figures lie (The Inventor, Client 9).
The Rosetta Stone for Gibney’s dogmatic resistance to mendacity is The Armstrong Lie. Gibney’s irritation arises not just from the general lies that Lance Armstrong told the world, but from the lies that Lance Armstrong told him during the making of the movie, yielding a documentary about the nature of deception and self-deception.
Gibney’s new two-part Apple TV+ docuseries Boom! Boom! The World vs. Boris Becker is a complementary text to The Armstrong Lie. It’s about a revered sports icon whose falsehoods eventually led to personal disgrace. It’s structured around two extensive interviews conducted at different points in the subject’s prevarication — once in delusion and once when facing a reckoning.

Melbourne, Jan 27 (Ians) India tennis star Sania Mirza on Friday wrapped up her legendary Grand slam career as Australian Open mixed doubles runner-up. The Indian ace and partner Rohan Bopanna lost to the all-Brazilian pair Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos in the mixed doubles final here at Melbourne Park.
Sania and Bopanna were beaten 7-6(2), 6-2 by Brazilians Stefani and Matos, who were playing in their first-ever Grand Slam final.
In her final major, the 36-year-old Sania admitted her emotions almost boiled over after the Indians stunned third seeds and reigning Wimbledon champions Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski in the semifinals. There was no holding them back after her final match at Melbourne Park, 22 years after she first teamed with Bopanna.
Interestingly, Sania claimed her first major in 2009 at Melbourne Park, when she paired up with Mahesh Bhupathi. And she ended her illustrious Grand Slam career here.
