- Alternative metal band from Seattle, Washington. The band became famous during the Grunge movement in the 90's but rejects the "grunge" label, stating that they are a metal band.

It was the band's first album in 14 years (since their 1995 self-titled album, also known as "Tripod"), and also their first release with new singer William DuVall, who joined the band after the death of original lead singer Layne Staley. The album's title song is a tribute to Staley written and sung by Cantrell, accompanied by Elton John on piano.

- Since June 2017, Alice in Chains has been on Studio X in Seattle working on their new album, tentatively set for release in the Summer of 2018.
- The claymation dolls of the band used in the music video for "I Stay Away" in 1994, are on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland. In May 2014, the band visited the museum and shared the photos on their official blog.
- In the Layne Staley-era of Alice in Chains, Jerry Cantrell sang lead vocals in the songs "Brother", "Right Turn", "Don't Follow", "No Excuses", "Grind", "Heaven Beside You", "Over Now" and "Killer Is Me", besides singing the verses on "Would?". William DuVall joined the band in 2006 to sing Staley's parts at concerts, while Cantrell assumed full-time lead vocals in the first album without Staley, "Black Gives Way to Blue" (2009), and continued this role in the follow up, "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here" (2013), with DuVall harmonizing with him. The only song that Cantrell sings Staley's parts at concerts is "Got Me Wrong". Many fans have expressed their desire to see Cantrell singing the song "Nutshell", which he always dedicates to Staley and Mike Starr.
