Rachel Harris is an actress who’s caught my attention in some recent movies. She was memorable as Parker Posey’s stern lesbian lover in Home for Purim, the ‘movie-within-a-movie’ in For Your Consideration and she’s the mom in the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid flicks. Now she’s been given her first lead in Natural Selection and has proven that she’s more than capable of handling a big screen lead role. It’s unfortunate that the script for Natural Selection, despite a promising start, is unworthy of her talents.
Linda White (Rachael Harris) has been married for more than 20 years to Abe (John Diehl), a fundamentalist Christian who refuses to have sex with her. When the couple had trouble conceiving early in their marriage, it was discovered that Linda was infertile, and believing that sex without producing offspring is a sin, Abe insisted their union be celibate.

Natural Selection

Jesus culture is alive and well in Robbie Pickering’s Natural Selection. No one speaks in tongues or falls over in church or sings God’s praise in the choir, but following the Lord’s word is a way of life for the people in the small Texas town where the story takes place. No one is perfect, life will throw punches, but these folks aren’t worried because they know that He will help them find a way to cope.
Linda White (Rachael Harris) is a product of this upbringing and because of her unique situation, she suffers its consequences daily. Unable to bear children, Linda’s worth as a woman, wife and child of God seems to be in constant question. As if motherhood were the only way to reach adulthood, she is treated like a child...

As cliched as it may sound, the "must-see" movie at SXSW 2011 is Natural Selection, a joyful bittersweet story filmed in Smithville, Texas. From the opening moment, writer/director Robbie Pickering pulls viewers in for a fun and passionate ride from the pinnacle of conservative Christianity to the lows of the wrong side of the law.
The film focuses on Linda White (Rachael Harris), a barren and lonely Christian housewife in her 40s, who leads a sheltered existence in suburban Texas. Stringent religious convictions forbid Linda and her husband Abe (John Diehl) from copulating without the intent of procreating, resulting in an asexual marriage that has left Linda frustrated, lonely and full of shame. To compensate, she lives her life for everyone but herself.
After Abe suffers a stroke, Linda discovers that he has been keeping a secret -- donating to a sperm bank for over 20 years. From his hospital bed...

Premiering in the Narrative Feature Competition at SXSW 2011, writer-director Robbie Pickering’s feature debut centers on Linda White (Rachael Harris), a barren Christian housewife leading a sheltered existence in suburban Texas. When she discovers her dying husband has a 23-year-old illegitimate son named Raymond (Matt O’Leary) in Florida, she grants his final wish to find Raymond and bring him back before her husband passes away. A selection in this year’s Narrative Competition, director Robbie Pickering brings us Natural Selection. This hysterical entry in the festival sees Linda White (Rachael Harris, who you may recognize from her similarly uptight role in The Hangover) embarking on an ill-fated quest to bring home the son she’s never known. Well, it’s actually her husband’s illegitimate son – her dying husband’s illegitimate son – so the thoroughly Christian Linda sets out from Texas to Florida to bring home twenty-three year old Raymond to a dying Abe.

Families aren't supposed to get along. Not all the time, at least. In-fighting and pettiness is par for the course when it comes to the interpersonal politics of family life, but in "Natural Selection," that dreadful sense of awkwardness and insecurity is explored at a wholly unusual level.
"Natural Selection," which premieres at the South by Southwest Film Festival kicking off next week, focuses on Linda White (played by comedian Rachael Harris), a barren Christian housewife who can only watch as her husband wastes away on his deathbed. But the dying man makes a startling confession: he has a 23-year-old illegitimate son, Raymond (Matt O'Leary), and he wants to see him before he dies.
The shockingly sympathetic Linda agrees to her husband's request and sets off on a road trip that takes her all the way from Texas and straight to Raymond's front door. We proudly present the results of...
