Kevin Wilson has been named president of theatrical distribution for MGM and parent company Amazon Original Studios.
The promotion was announced during CinemaCon, the annual gathering of theater owners and Hollywood studios in Las Vegas. It also comes as Amazon makes a major push into theatrical, beginning with Ben Affleck’s Air.
Wilson essentially succeeds Erik Lomis, the veteran distribution executive who passed away suddenly on March 22. He was Lomis’ colleague for many years.
Word of Wilson’s ascension was announced by Courtenay Valenti, the newly installed head of film, streaming and theatrical for Amazon Studios and MGM. She said the passing of Lomis was a “tremendously sad moment and profound loss for all who knew and worked with him” but that the companies are fortunate to have Wilson.
“We are at a very dynamic and exciting time now that the integration of the MGM film group and Amazon Studios is complete.

Amazon Studios announced in an internal memo on Tuesday that it will combine its theatrical distribution team with that of the recently acquired MGM, with Kevin Wilson serving as president of the division.
In addition to Wilson’s promotion, Valenti announced that Amazon Studios’ distribution chief Mark Boxer will remain with the studio as head of specialty distribution, reporting to Wilson.
Wilson was a longtime partner of MGM theatrical distribution chief Erik Lomis, who died in March. He will oversee all of Amazon and MGM’s domestic theatrical distribution strategy and report to Amazon’s film division head Courtenay Valenti.
“Erik Lomis’s passing was a tremendously sad moment and profound loss for all who knew and worked with him. But we are very fortunate that Kevin Wilson, Erik’s partner and colleague of many years, will be Head of Theatrical Distribution,” Valenti said in a memo to employees.

Kevin Wilson has officially been named Head of Theatrical Distribution for Amazon Studios and MGM as the parent company combines labels into one theatrical distribution group.
The news comes in the wake of the death of the previous Amazon-mgm distribution boss, Erik Lomis, who was the subject of a heartfelt remembrance Tuesday at CinemaCon by several including Chris Aronson; former MGM Motion Picture bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, now at Warner Bros; and as Warner Bros Domestic Distribution chief Jeff Goldstein.
Recently, Amazon’s pivot back to theatrical saw the $272 million global success of Creed III and the current $69M global gross for Ben Affleck’s dramedy Air, about how Nike nabbed Michael Jordan to make the Air Jordan sneaker. Wilson is a longtime lieutenant of Lomis and is a distribution vet who has handled 100 films that in total grossed more that $7 billion stateside.

Amazon Studios and Prime Video officially welcomed MGM into their sizable Seattle home on Thursday, all for the low, low adoption rate of $8.5 billion. Will the newfangled streaming service and the near-century-old studio play nice together inside their new living arrangement?
Well, for starters, James Bond isn’t about to go straight to the small screen — so theatrical plans won’t be shaken (nor stirred) too much, one Amazon insider told IndieWire.
Amazon Studios and Prime Video (now with 100 percent more MGM!) will continue to support theatrical releases, the person who spoke with us on the condition of anonymity said, but there will not be a universal approach to deciding where a movie goes and when. Over time, leadership at the combined company will evaluate what is best on a film-by-film basis. While there will be no hard line against theatrical, there is also no window commitment in place. “The direct-to-service strategy is happening,” Amazon Studios Head Jennifer Salke said at TCA this morning.
While Amazon Studios will continue to be a respecter of theatrical windows, it currently is making movies specifically for its Amazon Prime portal, and very well could emulate a similar qualifying theatrical-quick-to-streaming window that Netflix practiced this past awards season for its pics Roma, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and 22 July.
You can’t say that Netflix’s awards season model didn’t work: Roma landed 10 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Director, while the Coen Brothers’ Buster Scruggs busted in with three Oscar noms. And these pics didn’t have to suffer any headlines about poor ticket sales.
Salke pointed to projects that already are in the works, i.e. the Blumhouse thematically-linked streaming pics, and Nicole Kidman’s deal that will make pics direct for Prime.

Props to Amazon Studios at CinemaCon. Unlike other studios who drop their whole slate before the press and exhibitors, then hold back on releasing key trailers promptly after, Amazon is providing a look at Gus Van Sant’s latest title which world premiered at Sundance. The movie opens on July 13. Amazon, which now distributes its own movies under distrib chief Mark Boxer, held a lunch today at Caesar’s Palace where they’re showing off this year’s slate.
Don’t Worry is based on the memoir by John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix), who became paralyzed after a car accident at age 21 and turned to drawing as a form of therapy. Jonah Hill and Jack Black also star. It’s one of two Amazon movies the three-time Oscar nominee has this year in addition to the April crime noir You Were Never Really Here. Phoenix also starred with Rooney Mara in Weinstein Co.
