- Played 202 games with the Essendon Bombers football club from 1983 to 1996, and was the team's captain from 1992 to 1995.
- Played in the 1984 and 1985 premiership sides, and was the captain of the 1993 premiership team.
- On his retirement as a player, he became the assistant coach for Essendon, and later for North Melbourne.
- Was the senior coach of the Geelong Cats football club from 2000 to 2010, and coached the team to premierships in 2007 and 2009.
- Returned to the Essendon Bombers football club in November 2010 as the senior assistant coach, before being appointed the senior coach for 2014.
