The last weekend of August, Toronto's biggest genre fans unite to wreak havoc, hang out and meet other fans as well as meet and greet their biggest idols in genre at FanExpo. I was able to interview an indie horror film director, Chris Power and meet the main Cannibal - Anthony Alviano.
It was such a pleasure to meet and chat with these guys. I had heard about Long Pigs first on Facebook, and wanted to see it instantly. I finally found this film at my local Blockbuster and convinced my boyfriend to rent it. What happened next was truly a treat!
I popped it into the DVD player and sat back with my popcorn. A radio announcer channeling his inner Bob McCowan (of CBC radio fame) assaults the viewer with his opinions, then we're introduced to Anthony, the sweet, gentle man who kills a prostitute just so he can make stew.

Let's face it, independent film is really hit or miss. The majority of moviegoers are desensitized with all the special effects and acting talent depicted in theatrical features. So when one comes across an indie flick, the material never fully stands a chance in earning their praise. At this point, many indie filmmakers would like to cause harm to me for stating the obvious.
Then there is Long Pigs. Another independent flick trying to secure distribution. Right away, this reviewer understands the production will be working with a low-budget and the overall level of acting could be suspect. Usually painful. Thankfully, writers/producers/directors Nathan Hynes and Chris Powers put together a very decent 81 minutes of entertainment.
Long Pigs is a horror mockumentary about two rookie filmmakers looking to capture shocking material to sell to a major studio. The two "professionals" follow around Anthony McAlistar (Anthony Alviano) who participates in cannibalism.

For Canadian filmmakers Nathan Hynes and Chris Power, the journey to make their full-length feature debut, Long Pigs, was anything but typical.
“I had moved from Newfoundland to Toronto after I finished school,” explained Hynes. “I worked in a restaurant and the hostess told me that there she was talking to this film guy that had come into the restaurant. So I got all excited because I thought it was going to meet some big time movie guy.”
“I so badly wanted to get into the industry, but had no idea how to get my foot in the door. So when I walked over to this big shot filmmaker, it turned out to be Chris who was just another guy like me starting off in the industry. We hit it off immediately though and started working together right after that,” Hynes added.
