- Markus Schächter grew up in poor circumstances as the son of a war-disabled father along with five siblings. He finished school with a high school diploma. Schächter then studied history, political science, journalism and religious studies at the universities of Munich, Lyon, Paris and Mainz through the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's support for talented students. In 1974 he completed his studies with the first state examination in order to work as a journalist for the German Press Agency in Paris, among others. In 1976, Schächter moved to Südwest Funk as a culture editor, where he began his career within the public broadcaster.
In 1977 he became press spokesman for the Ministry of Culture in Rhineland-Palatinate for four years before working in a managerial position for the Second German Television ZDF in Mainz from 1981. In 1998, Markus Schächter was appointed program director of the station. In 2002, Markus Schächter was appointed channel director of ZDF by the ZDF television council. In the same year he became chairman of the board of "Aktion Mensch e.V." and patron of the Georg Meistermann Museum's circle of friends and supporters "The Floating Point". In his position as director, he accepted various teaching positions at universities. In 2003 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Music and Theater in Hanover.
In 2004 he was appointed professor by the HfMT University of Music and Theater in Hamburg for his services as a teacher in the field of media practice. In December 2005, Schächter was confirmed in his office with the best result of all ZDF director elections.
