The Indigenous creative teams in Australia and New Zealand were developing the anthology feature Cook 2020: Our Right of Reply when they decided the basic premise wasn’t right.
When Screen Australia’s Indigenous department and the New Zealand Film Commission (Nzfc) agreed to fund the project last year the intention was for each of the eight teams to provide an Indigenous perspective on the 250th anniversary of James Cook’s maiden voyage to the Pacific.
“We have scrapped that idea. The film will touch on survival and colonisation but it doesn’t refer directly back to Cook,” says Mitchell Stanley, who is co-producing with his No Coincidence Media partner Toni Stowers and Mia Henry-Tierney (Baby Mama’s Club).

‘The Beach.’
Filmmaker Warwick Thornton was mentally and physically exhausted last year so he decided to spend a couple of months in isolation on a remote beach on the north-west coast of Western Australia.
Seeing the potential for a documentary, Thornton and the producers, Michelle Parker, Mitchell Stanley and Tanith Glynn-Maloney, sent a three-page pitch document to Nitv and Screen Australia.
The result is The Beach, a lyrical, evocative six-part series which premieres on Nitv, Sbs and Sbs On Demand this Friday at 7.30 pm.
Across the three hours, the Sweet Country and Samson and Delilah writer-director sharpens his skills to hunt and gather food, prepares surprisingly exquisite dishes and talks to three chickens as he relates stories from his childhood and adult life.
“I was feeling a bit shitty, mentally and physically drained, and I needed a break,” he tells If. “There was an incredible trust between Nitv and Screen Australia to make it.

Michelle Parker and her former fiancé Dale Smith had always had a complicated relationship. The parents of small twins, Parker and Smith had split up - but the acrimony continued. They even haggled over an engagement ring on a 2011 episode of The People's Court. On the day their People's Court episode aired, Michelle Parker dropped off her 3-year-old twins at Smith's home. She planned to run some errands in her Hummer before heading to her to her job as a bartender. She never arrived. Her Hummer was found abandoned. Three weeks later, divers found her cell phone in a nearby lake.

Reluctantly believing she is dead, the family of Michelle Parker, the Florida mom who vanished after appearing on The People's Court in 2011, filed a wrongful death lawsuit Thursday against her ex-fiancé, Dale Smith, whom they believe was responsible. Parker's family claims Smith knows what happened on Nov. 17, 2011, the day Parker was last seen alive. "The family doesn't want to believe that Michelle is dead, but they believe that she is," their attorney, John Morgan, tells People. "This is a case that has gone cold, so a civil case is the only way that Michelle's family will finally get answers. Given the passing of time,...

Peter (Holland Noël) is a young, aspiring documentary filmmaker who shoots his quaint Wisconsin hometown with poetic artfulness. His camera placement is oh-so-purposeful as he carefully composes his shots to develop relationships between the onscreen objects. It is as if the intentional framing establishes a uniquely cinematic meaning for the objects; by choosing what appears within the frame, Peter creates connections and disconnections. This unadulterated cinematic world serves as an escape for Peter, whose home life is excruciatingly mundane. For the most part, Peter remains secluded in his bedroom, reviewing and editing his footage. When Peter ventures outside of his bedroom, his conversations with his parents (Michelle Parker, Alan Struthers) are stilted and emotionless, as if they are merely actors who have been forced to appear in the same scene as Peter.

As the search for Michelle Parker enters its third week, there has been a break in the case, as Parker's cell phone has been found. Investigators brought in Parker's mother, Yvonne Stewart, to identify her daughter's iPhone on Wednesday, Central Florida News 13 reports. For now, they are not revealing how, when or where they found the phone, not even to Parker's family. It's a small step in the right direction for a family consumed by the ordeal. "It's all I can think about," Parker's sister, Lauren Erickson, tells People. "It's all any of us can think about." But there are...

An estranged couple goes on The People's Court hoping to settle an ugly dispute and one of them winds up missing. Cue the Sandra Levy-like media obsession. Yesterday, Orlando police said the only suspect in the disappearance of Michelle Parker is her former fiancé, Dale Smith Jr. So while the plot thickens, we thought we'd look back at what led up to the headline-grabbing announcement. 2006: Parker, a 33-year-old bartender from Geneva, Fla., and Smith, a 40-year-old ex-Marine with a violent past, begin an on-off relationship that includes twin girls. (Parker also has an 11-year-old son from a previous relationship.) August 2009: Parker requests a domestic violence injunction against...

In the days before her appearance on The People's Court was to air, Michelle Parker told friends that she dreaded seeing herself on the show. "She wasn't looking forward to seeing her dirty laundry on national TV," a friend tells People. "She was embarrassed." Indeed, the case was embarrassing. Dale Smith, Parker's ex-fiancé, sued her for the cost of a $5,000 ring that she had thrown over a balcony during a heated argument. The behavior clearly irritated judge Marilyn Milian. "My 14-year-old has a more mature relationship with her boyfriend than you guys do," Milian snapped in court. "You're both complete idiots.

Tuesday morning, Mediaite founder and ABC legal analyst Dan Abrams stopped by the set of Good Morning America to discuss the case of Florida woman Michelle Parker, who went missing after appearing on the daytime's People's Court television show.
