Toronto-based filmmaker Chanda Chevannes received a Gracie Award today for Outstanding Documentary. The Gracies are awarded annually by the Alliance for Women in Media. Living Downstream will be released on August 6 2013 by First Run Features on home video and VOD. Based on the acclaimed book by ecologist and cancer survivor Sandra Steingraber, PhD, Living Downstream follows Sandra during one pivotal year as she travels across North America, working to break the silence about cancer and its environmental links. Since shooting Living Downstream, Sandra has become a pivotal force in the anti-fracking movement. This is Chevannes third creative documentary and her first feature-length film. It has screened at numerous festivals in North America and internationally, culminating in the Mountainfilm series at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in October and a nationwide broadcast on Outside Television.
"I am so honoured to receive the Gracie Award in the presence of so many accomplished women in media," comments Chevannes. "With First Run's great reputation and extensive reach, I know the film will be seen by an ever-widening audience."
"In a year with a record-setting number of entries," said Erin M. Fuller, President of the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation, "Living Downstream displayed superior quality in writing, production and programming."...
