A moderate comedy set in the 1980s. Anna Faris and Topher Grace, also the producer, are its stars. By Peter Bradshaw
A funny but regrettably tiny cameo from Demetri Martin and a lively finale involving someone being trundled down a hill in a huge metal ball provide some points of interest in this moderate comedy set in the 1980s. It features the clothes, the hair, the music and the obligatory glimpse of the Gipper himself. Producer-star Topher Grace plays Matt, a once talented student and MIT graduate, who is now aimlessly employed at a video store, and still obsessing about his high-school crush Tori Frederking, played by the Australian Teresa Palmer. He hangs out with his buddy Barry (Dan Fogler) and sister Wendy (Anna Faris). Of course, Tori shows up, still stunning and now a high-flying employee of a merchant bank, so to impress her, poor Matt pretends to be...

If you're going to set your 80s comedy in the same fictional universe as the classic 80s comedies of John Hughes, you better make sure your movie is good enough to withstand the comparison. "Take Me Home Tonight" just isn't. Its characters are graduates of Shermer High -- the same fictional school where Hughes set movies like "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" -- which means Topher Grace's Matt might have shared classes with Alan Ruck's Cameron Frye and Dan Fogler's Barry could have been locker neighbors with Judd Nelson's John Bender. But I have a hard time imagining anyone twenty-five years from now making their own homage to "Take Me Home Tonight," or, for that matter, even remembering this mediocre comedy at all.

Chicago – Nostalgia films need a couple of elements to make them work. First, instant recognition with the era, and second, a reason to go there. “Take Me Home Tonight” lacks both characteristics, and lead actor Topher Grace can’t seem to light a fire under the rest of it.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
This film is set in the late 1980s, although the timeline is quite vague. As in most look-back scenarios, there are a parade of fashions from the era, conveniently set up in a big party scene. Even though the costumes and the soundtrack kept telling us it’s the ‘80s, it never felt that way, and the romantic comedy narrative could have been set in last week.
Topher Grace portrays Matt Franklin, a nebbish post-college graduate still pining for Tori (Teresa Palmer), his high school crush. Despite the background that he is a whip-smart MIT engineering graduate, he still lives...

Chicago – Reliving the 1980s is what Topher Grace, ironically known for “That ‘70s Show,” set out to do with the story line for his new film, “Take Me Home Tonight.” Comedian Demetri Martin has a supporting role in that film.
Grace developed the original story, about a post-collegiate guy named Matt working in a video store, trying to figure out the next stage of his life. When he encounters a high school crush named Tori (Teresa Palmer), he makes up a scenario where he works for the investment film Goldman Sachs. He then catches up to an actual Goldman Sachs employee, played by Demetri Martin, to back up his story. The rest of the movie is basically about Matt working through the deception.
HollywoodChicago.com caught up with these two co-stars, and talked about their new film and their rich and interesting careers so far.

Designing the project as a tribute to the films of his childhood, star Topher Grace (along with executive producer Gordon Kaywin) came up with the original story for Take Me Home Tonight , a comedy/drama set in the age of big hair, bright clothes and cassette tapes. Grace's character even begins his story working in a bona fide Suncoast Video. Set in 1988, Grace is Matt Franklin, a recent MIT graduate who, back living with his family in the town he grew up in, just can't seem to manage a hold on his future. When a chance run-in with his childhood crush, Tori Frederking (Teresa Palmer), leads Matt to invent a fictional persona to impress her, he and his best friend (Dan Fogler) wind up spending the party night of their lives trying to keep the lie going. I'm happy to report that I just saw Relativity Media's "Take Me Home Tonight" starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, and Dan Fogler from director Michael Dowse.
The 80s-centric film will open March 4th, and all I could say is, John Hughes would have been proud! (Red Band Trailer Below!)
I will post my review very soon, as well as my fun one-on-one interviews with the cast :happy
For now, here's more info on "Take Me Home Tonight" from Relativity Media:
Recent MIT grad Matt Franklin should be working for a Fortune 500 company and starting his upward climb to full-fledged yuppie-hood. Instead, the directionless 23-year-old confounds family and friends by taking a part-time job behind the counter of a video store at the Sherman Oaks Galleria. But Matt's silent protest against maturity comes to a screeching halt once his unrequited high school crush, Tori Frederking, walks into the store.

Take Me Home Tonight, starring Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler and Teresa Palmer opens nationwide on March 4th, 2011, and I want to give you a little preview. While this isn't the sort of thing that would normally jump onto my radar, I'm generally a fan of Topher Grace, and there's something about the recent MIT grad who works at the video store that resonates oddly with me.
Take a look at the trailer and a couple images, as well as the official synopsis below, and let me know what you think of this one. I think there's some potential here, though it may just be a brilliant job of putting together a trailer, and if nothing else, I'm interested to know what Grace and Anna Faris can make out of the thing.

The inner workings of Hollywood are a perpetual mystery, particularly when film scheduling is involved. The normal filmmaking, script-to-screen process is, in a nutshell, basic: Script is written, produced, filmed, edited, promoted — and voila! It hits theaters. But as many beleaguered writers/producers/directors/actors know, things don't always go so smoothly.
Take, for example, the comedy "Take Me Home Tonight" (formerly titled "Kids in America"), which stars Topher Grace (who's also executive producer), Ana Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer and Michelle Trachtenberg. Not exactly an indie, no-name cast, and yet the film completed principal photography in late 2006/ early 2007 and is just now getting released.

[1] Relativity Media and Imagine Entertainment have finally released a movie trailer for the long-delayed dramedy Take Me Home Tonight (previously titled Kids in America). Directed by Michael Dowse (Goon, Fubar, It's All Gone Pete Tong), the story follows "an aimless college grad who pursues his dream girl at a wild Labor Day weekend party. He, his twin sister and their best friend struggle with their burgeoning adulthood over the course of the night." The movie's cast includes Topher Grace, Anna Faris, Dan Fogler, Teresa Palmer, MichelleTrachtenberg, Michael Biehn, Chris Pratt, Lucy Punch, Michael Ian Black, and Demetri Martin. The project shot in late 2006/early 2007, and has been completed for over three years now, sitting on the shelf. I usually am a sucker for teen comedy adventures which take place over the course of one night, but this seems a bit generic (or maybe just dated at this point?). Watch the...

Anna Faris and Dan Fogler are starring alongside Topher Grace in Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment's Kids in America, a comedy directed by Michael Dowse being produced by Brian Grazer, Gordon Kaywin and Grace.
The movie revolves around Grace, a recent college graduate, Faris, his twin sister, and Fogler, his best friend, during their misadventures at a raucous Labor Day party in 1988. Jeff and Jackie Filgo wrote the screenplay from a story by Dowse.
Teresa Palmer (The Grudge 2) also is on board the production, as the girl of Grace's dreams.
Production is scheduled to begin the week of Feb. 19.
Faris, who starred in all four of the Scary Movie films, is attached to star in an untitled comedy about a centerfold for Happy Madison and Paramount. The project is based on her idea and is being written by Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Kiwi Smith. Faris, whose Smiley Face premiered at Sundance, next appears in Mama's Boy opposite Jon Heder and Diane Keaton.
