He moved to Canada in 1940 to escape the Nazi occupation. He studied at
the University of Toronto; later, he was professor of composition
there. He became one of Canada's best-known classical composers. His
career spanned more than 50 years, during which he wrote over 100 works
for orchestra and chamber ensembles. He had an encyclopedic memory of
the classical music literature, and refused to be swayed by current
trends in composing.
