Victoria Cocieru, Sergio Guadarrama, Geoffrey Mac and Nancy Volpe-Beringer are the final four “Project Runway” designers competing for the season 18 title, but none of them designed the season’s very best look. At least, not according to the fans we’ve polled. Out of the 12 design challenges that preceded the New York Fashion Week finale, the best look came out of the very first one: Brittany Allen‘s space-age jumpsuit from the season premiere episode, “Blast Off.” She teamed up with Guadarrama in that episode to make complementary looks for space station hotel getaway, and almost a quarter of respondents (24%) said that sleek outfit was the season’s very best look.

Last week the top six designers went to the Vessel in New York City to present avant garde looks. Brittany Allen presented a voluminous pink coat whose execution was lacking upon closer inspection, while Marquise Foster created a silvery Tin Man look that the judges thought was overthought and had proportion problems. So both of them were eliminated — again. Both had been eliminated once before and got second chances on the show, but couldn’t quite take their good fortune all the way to the finale.

So close, yet so far. Marquise Foster was eliminated on “Project Runway” just shy of the Fashion Week finale. There was a double elimination in “The Height of Avant-Garde Fashion,” leaving him and Brittany Allen on the outs while Geoffrey Mac, Victoria Cocieru, Sergio Guadarrama and Nancy Volpe-Beringer advanced to the deciding round of the competition. Did the judges get it right or wrong? Scroll down to see our poll results at the bottom of this post.

Most of the fans we surveyed (58%) said, “He deserved to be eliminated.” It was an avant garde challenge in which the designers had to create innovative looks inspired by the Vessel in New York City. Foster loved the idea of the challenge since he’s a veteran of the ballroom scene and thus had experience with out-there fashion. But the judges weren’t too thrilled with his look.

I was surprised to see Brittany Allen eliminated from “Project Runway” in the season’s last challenge before Fashion Week, “The Height of Avant-Garde Fashion.” But were the judges right to send her packing? We asked our readers, and that result was kind of surprising to me too. Scroll down for our complete poll results.
Most fans (61%) said Allen deserved to be eliminated. This despite the fact that she was the front-runner to win the entire competition earlier in the season. She admitted herself at the start of the challenge that avant garde fashion wasn’t her thing. She’s a more ready-to-wear designer. But she devised a voluminous pink coat that the judges admired from afar for its visual impact and romance when they saw it during the fashion show at the Vessel. Project Runway mentor Christian Siriano says he is “really, really sad this week” as he hosts his after show this week. “Two unbelievably talented designers” — Brittany Allen and Marquise Foster — were eliminated just as they were on the brink of making it to the final four. Plus all three had to get up at the crack of dawn to do a fashion show inside of New York’s landmark the Vessel for their avant-garde challenge, so they are all a bit sleepy.
The odd thing is, both of the contestants received second chances. Marquise came back after fellow designer Dayoung Kim dropped out due to illness. He went on to win the tuxedo challenge while Brittany became part of “Runway” history by earning the first-ever Siriano save on the same episode. “She was the first winner and a strong frontrunner throughout the entire season,” the Season 4 winner notes. “Making it...

Last week’s “Project Runway” episode, “Olympic Game Plan,” was a feel-good, happy-ending kind of episode with the designers making victory dresses for inspiring athletes. No one went home at the end of the challenge. But that meant that this week, in “The Height of Avant-Garde Fashion,” two designers would fall back down to Earth in stead of just one. So which four advanced to Fashion Week, and who missed the cut? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.

Client challenges are always tough since the designers have to work with people who don’t necessarily have a fashion background. On one hand, you need to make your client happy, comfortable and confident. But this is also still a fashion competition, so you also need to be true to yourself as an artist and present something modern and unique. Sometimes those priorities clash with designers either ignoring their clients or abandoning their own creative identities entirely. The ideal is always somewhere in the...

There are six designers left on “Project Runway,” and five of them have won challenges. The odd woman out is Nancy Volpe-Beringer. Now, going into episode 11, the fans who have given us their forecasts in our predictions center think she’s the contestant most likely to be eliminated. Check out this week’s complete racetrack odds here.
Volpe-Beringer made history as the oldest designer ever to compete on the show at age 64, and she’s nothing if not a survivor. When given a choice between a designer who has produced winning looks before and one who hasn’t, the judges tend to send home the one who hasn’t. But the only two times Volpe-Beringer has landed in the bottom two, the judges have kept her in the competition and eliminated the designer with past challenge victories.

Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna discuss his loss during a challenge inspired by the pop-art queen and exuberant guest judge Ashley Longshore whose vibrant patterns featuring birds, flowers, butterflies … plus pink dildos and smiley-faced nipples — were turned into fabric.
Daniel notes that Marquise was the first dismissed contestant who has won a challenge previously — one that involved animal prints. Unfortunately, he also notes the designer also landed in the bottom twice before. “He had been really up and down,” Daniel says. “I thought his look was better than the judges gave him credit for. I liked that sort of bomber jacket he created.

Season 18 of “Project Runway” has cut the field in half, so it’s getting tougher and tougher for the judges to decide who to send home. That may be bad news for Delvin McCray, Nancy Volpe-Beringer and Dayoung Kim, who are the only designers remaining who still haven’t won a design challenge. So if they have a bad week, will the judges give them the benefit of the doubt or dismiss them outright?
See‘Project Runway’ Season 18: Worst Looks
It’s not guaranteed that the judges will eliminate one of those three on an off night. After all, the bottom three in last week’s episode, “Project Runway X Ashley Longshore” included two past challenge winners (Victoria Cocieru and Marquise Foster) along with Volpe-Beringer. But instead of sending home the designer who never won, they ousted Foster.
Nevertheless, the judges do take past performance into account when deciding who to send home.

Season 18 of “Project Runway” has cut the field in half from the 16 designers who started the season at JFK Airport in “Blast Off” to the eight who remain after Marquise Foster was ousted in “Project Runway X Ashley Longshore.” But which eliminated contestant was most unjustly axed? Or do you think the judges have been spot-on every single time? Check out all of this season’s eliminated looks by clicking above, and scroll down to vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
I for one think the judges got off on the wrong foot right away by eliminating both Asma Bibi and Jenn Charkow for their unsuccessful collaboration in the season premiere. It’s impossible to know exactly what a designer might have accomplished if only they’d stayed, but it seemed unfair to send two people home right away on a team challenge that might not...

Christian Siriano‘s dry humor and on-point verbal insights are one of the main reasons that Bravo’s “Project Runway” reboot last year was a successful revival. And whoever thought of giving the workroom mentor his own after-show with the eliminated contestant, which posts on the channel’s website once the main show airs, deserves a raise.
This week, he engages Marquise Foster in a game of Heads Up, in which they both take turns either giving a clue or guessing which name is displayed on the card above their heads. “You have to explain who this person is,” the mentor explains,” but you can’t say their name. That’s the whole point.”

On this week’s episode of “Project Runway,” exuberant pop-art queen Ashley Longshore‘s punchy fabric designs made for quite the colorful workroom. The remaining designers were tasked to make outfits from material that featured butterflies, birds and flowers — but also pink dildos and smiling nipples. In the end, Marquise Foster became ninth contestant to pack up his workroom area. The Brooklyn native’s sin? An ill-fitting white shirt whose flaws he couldn’t hide on the runway.
As usual on the after-show segment (see video below), hosted by Christian Siriano, adult beverages were provided and once again the mentor griped about the green vegetation that the never-seen cocktail maker insists on putting in his glass. Since this was his third time on the bottom, the laid-back Marquise felt that it was three strikes and you’re out. But he was happy that they at least liked his skirt and jacket.

The field has been cut almost in half on “Project Runway,” with nine designers left going into this week’s show out of the original 16. So who among them survived the latest episode, “Project Runway X Ashley Longshore”? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
This challenge was not for the faint-hearted — or at least not for the understated at heart. That’s because the designers had to collaborate with Ashley Longshore, a pop artist whom Christian Siriano compared to a “modern-day Andy Warhol.” She was also the artist in residence at New York Fashion Week, and the designers had to use her artwork for inspiration in designing this week’s looks.

‘Project Runway’: Three strikes and he’s out for Sergio Guadarrama? Fans think he’s on borrowed time
For the third week in a row we’re predicting elimination for “Project Runway” designer Sergio Guadarrama. But is that just wishful thinking? Our odds are based on the combined predictions of “Runway” fans who give us their forecasts every week here in our predictions center, but fans have also let us know how little they like Guadarrama’s attitude. Are they just hope-dicting him to leave the competition? Maybe not.
As of this writing Guadarrama gets leading odds of 21/10 of being sent packing, and though we were wrong about him being ousted for the last two weeks, we weren’t far off. The judges thought he was one of the worst designers in “Sew 80’s,” leading his fellow designers astray in a team challenge, and he responded so poorly that he told the judges he didn’t care what they thought. Then he landed at the bottom again in “There is Only One You,...

The “Project Runway” team challenge in “Sew 80’s” was a roller coaster of tension — between the designers, and between one designer and the judges. So this week’s wide open challenge came as a relief … or did it? In “There is Only One You,” the designers were free to create whatever looks they wanted with inspiration from their personal heritages. So who was truly inspired, and who expired? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happened.
On one hand, a challenge with no parameters beyond the designers own backgrounds and imaginations sounds like a breath of fresh air for a designer. But having no constraints also means having no specific direction. Sometimes having too many choices is overwhelming, especially in a one-day challenge like this one when you need to make decisions fast.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the fifth episode of “Project Runway” Season 18.
After Tyler Neasloney’s exit on last week’s episode of “Project Runway,” viewers wondered who would be the next to talk back to the judges. For those who come for the fashion but stay for the drama, thankfully it didn’t take long to get an answer: Sergio Guadarrama was not willing to take the criticism of his team’s 1980s look.
The fifth episode of the 18th season of “Project Runway” was stuffed with the usual conflict that comes with a themed challenge, control issues and cohesion, but contestants’ overall attitudes took a turn for the audacious during elimination.
Music icon Cyndi Lauper joined judges Brandon Maxwell, Elaine Welteroth and Nina Garcia this week to give feedback on the pop-punk 1980s-inspired challenge, and a history lesson of the era. “Don...

“Project Runway” started season 18 by flying to a space station in the future, but this week the show time-traveled in the opposite direction. In “Sew 80’s,” the remaining 11 designers had to create looks inspired by the 1980s aesthetic of legendary musician Cyndi Lauper. But there was a twist: just like in that futuristic episode, this was a dreaded team challenge. So whose true colors shined through? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
The “Blast Off” team challenge was manageable since it divided the designers into pairs. But challenges get harder the more different viewpoints you’re trying to incorporate into a single collection. After four weeks of competition, who’s the front-runner to win “Project Runway”? “I hope Brittany’s going to win. I really do,” argued Tyler Neasloney during the “Runway” after-show after he was eliminated in “The Ultimate Upcycle.” Christian Siriano didn’t expect that answer, but Neasloney explained, “Brittany has such big dick energy.”

A lot of our readers agree with Neasloney, but Brittany Allen is not quite the front-runner yet. She’s closing in on the top spot, though. As of this writing she ranks a very close second in our odds, which are based on the combined predictions of “Runway” fans who place their bets every week right here in our predictions center. She has improved to 29/10 odds, her strongest showing yet — even stronger than right after she won the first design challenge of the season in “Blast Off.

It was the Goodwill hunting episode for Bravo’s “Project Runway” on January 2 as the designers were tasked to repurpose second-hand clothes into an upscale outfit for the show’s host, model Karlie Kloss, to wear at a Paris event for the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Complicating matters? This was the first one-day challenge of Season 18.
As usual, Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna discussed the outcome of the fourth episode as the 11 remaining contestants scrambled to collect piles of previously worn duds to upcycle into a chic ensemble. They are eager to discuss the outfit that landed on the bottom — namely, Tyler Neasloney‘s supposed Jackie O type look. As Daniel notes, it was his third week in a row with a low score from the judges.

Tyler Neasloney had a tendency to throw shade on “Project Runway” this season, but he usually took it as well as he dished it out, joking during his negative “Sleigh the Runway” critiques that the judges roasted him “like a Christmas ham,” and then acknowledging at the beginning of “The Ultimate Upcycle” that he had become the show’s “most popular bottom.” But he might have stepped over the line at the end of “Upcycle.”
The challenge was to use secondhand Goodwill finds to create a new stylish look for host Karlie Kloss to wear in Paris. The judges didn’t like it. At all. Brandon Maxwell argued that he couldn’t imagine Kloss wearing it anywhere, to which Neasloney replied, “Not even to dinner with the Kushners?”

We have a new “Project Runway” front-runner, at least according to the combined predictions of the fans we’ve polled here in our predictions center. After two weeks of leading our odds, lab coat-wearing aspiring couturier Delvin McCray has slipped to second place. Now our readers think Marquise Foster has the advantage. He currently gets leading odds of 43/20. Do you agree? Which way do you think the tide is turning? Make or update your own predictions here.
Foster won a previous challenge — his animal-print streetwear in “Cats of the Urban Jungle” was a hit with the judges — but that was three weeks ago. So his rise may reflect more of a lack of confidence in McCray, who was the runner-up in that same challenge, but struggled to figure out how to use unconventional materials in the last episode, “Sleigh the Runway.”

Early warning: There will be no “Project Runway” episode airing on Thursday December 26 on Bravo this week. Instead, the show celebrated the season to be jolly last Thursday with a fun while not always successful unconventional materials challenge that employed traditional yuletide decorations to make a holiday cocktail dress.
As usual, Gold Derby editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna unwrapped their thoughts about how the designers on the top and those on the bottom fared on an episode called “Sleight the Runway.” Daniel was bummed that Alan Gonzalez ended up being put on the naughty list for what mentor Christian Siriano declared an “elf rave look.”

Hey, “Project Runway” fans. Did you know that for Season 18, Bravo posts an after-show after each episode airs that allows the dryly humorous mentor and Season 4 winner Christian Siriano a chance to muse about what unfolded on the show? Well, now you do.
Now that matters are getting interesting three episodes in and we have acquainted ourselves with most of the remaining designers — I admit I had no idea until this week’s episode that there was a contestant named Melanie Trygg on the show — we are going to do recaps of this entertaining addition to your PR experience.

Unconventional materials mean no trip to Mood for fabric and accessories this week. After the season 18 premiere of “Project Runway” Delvin McCray became our early favorite to win the competition based on the combined predictions of fans who have given us their forecasts here in our predictions center. And after a strong showing in the season’s second design challenge, “Cats of the Urban Jungle,” he’s still out front, but a couple of his rivals are gaining on him.

In the video recap above, Gold Derby editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna were ready to hiss at the idea of a “Project Runway” challenge inspired by the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical “Cats” that will pounce onto theater screens December 20. Judging from the trailers starring the likes of Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Alba and Taylor Swift as feline creatures both naked and clothed as the kitties scamper about the streets of London while wailing Andrew Lloyd Webber tunes, this week’s episode could have gone down a dangerous alley of bad ideas.
But it turned out this week’s fashion mission was more about trendy animal prints with an hip urban edge rather than a parade of fur-bearing apparel. As Daniel notes, “In the end, Veronica Sheaffer was the designer who went home for her look and it’s always the kiss of death when anyone makes...
