- He played for Yugoslavia in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, for which he won "Best Young Player", and for Croatia in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups.
- Although he was born in Germany, he moved to the now-dissolved state of Yugoslavia as a child.
- In 1987, Miroslav Ciro Blazevic said the following about Prosinecki: "If this lad makes it as a football player, I'll eat my coaching certificate" (Blazevic was coach of Dynamo Zagreb and Prosinecki was in that team, at the time). He probably regretted that later though... In 1998, Prosinecki was included in Blazevic's squad at the World Cup in France where he scored several goals, helping Croatia reach third place.
