Comcast is adding streaming service Apple TV+ to its U.S. pay-tv, broadband and smart-tv platforms, with new subscribers eligible for a 3-month free trial.
The rollout on Xfinity X1, Xfinity Flex and XClass TV starts today, with full availability across devices expected in the coming days. Apple TV+ launched last December on Comcast’s Sky Q and Sky Glass in the UK and Europe.
In recent years, Comcast has integrated a number of streaming outlets, including leading outlets like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video. The strategy has been to try to keep viewers within the Xfinity ecosystem, with the additional benefit of getting a piece of new subscription revenue generated there. The teaming with Apple has an additional dimension, however.
Apple TV+ is the first app built using a common set of development tools and resources through Comcast’s global technology platform, Comcast said in announcing the agreement.

Apple TV Plus is landing on Comcast’s full range of video platforms in the U.S. starting Monday, and the tech giant is offering three months free of the streaming service to the cable operator’s customers for a limited time.
The Apple TV Plus app will begin rolling out on Xfinity X1, Xfinity Flex and XClass TVs on March 7 and will be available across all eligible devices in the coming days, according to Comcast. Apple TV Plus launched on Comcast-owned provider Sky (Sky Q and Sky Glass) in the U.K. and Europe in December. The companies announced the distribution partnership in October.
Xfinity customers who are not currently Apple TV Plus subscribers are eligible for a three-month free trial of Apple TV Plus when they sign up via their Xfinity device by April 25. That’s the same offer that Apple currently extends to customers who purchase a new iPhone,...

Comcast has made its entry into the smart-tv sector official, announcing the launch of XClass TV, a Hisense-built set designed for streaming and offering access to Peacock Premium.
The first XClass TVs from Hisense will be in select Walmart stores this week and in the coming weeks through Walmart.com, the company said, confirming months of press reports about the product launch. There will be 43-inch and 50-inch models, starting at $298. The move positions Comcast to control more of the access to streaming, posing a potential threat to major gatekeepers such as Roku and Amazon Fire TV.
As the No. 1 U.S. cable provider, Comcast has pushed voice technology and broadband video previously through its Xfinity X1 and Flex platforms. The XClass will be the first time the company’s user interface and voice tools will be available directly to consumers without an Xfinity subscription. It also enables the...

Comcast is going direct-to-consumer — offering streaming TV services to consumers across the U.S., including outside its traditional service areas — with XClass TV, a new line of smart television sets built for streaming.
For the first time, Comcast’s streaming-entertainment platform will be available to consumers across the U.S., without an Xfinity subscription. The cable operator is looking to widen its addressable market as its base of Xfinity TV subscribers has steadily declined the last few years.
Comcast’s XClass TVs, serving in part as a vehicle to push signups to NBCU’s Peacock, will compete with other internet-connected smart TVs, including Roku TVs and Amazon’s new line of Fire TV Omni TVs.
The XClass TVs, built by Hisense and priced at starting at $298, will include 12 months of NBCUniversal’s Peacock Premium with ads (normally $4.99/month) for no extra cost. Live pay-tv services available on the platform at...

Cheryl Tiano, an agent for the Gorfaine-Schwartz Agency representing film, TV and game composers, died Monday night of complications from heart surgery. She was 59.
The agency issued this statement Tuesday night: “It is with deepest sorrow that we mourn the passing of our dear friend and colleague Cheryl Tiano. Cheryl was a beloved member of our Gsa family for nearly 30 years… It is impossible to express how deeply we will miss her.”
The Society of Composers & Lyricists added, “Cheryl had long ago taken her place amongst the top tier of composer agents in the entertainment industry. Her clients loved her, and she loved repping them. She is an enormous loss to our media music community.”
Tiano was a rare instance of a composer agent who was actually a musician. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, she studied composition at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and later graduated from California Institute of the Arts,...

Is Netflix, erstwhile pay-tv killer and bandwidth hog, going to be the savior of the TV bundle?
That could be the position Netflix finds itself, with the streaming service soon to be part of the TV bundles offered by Comcast, the U.S.’s biggest cable operator.
Once bitter foes, Comcast and Netflix announced Friday an expansion of their distribution pact under which the operator plans to include Netflix subscriptions in new and existing Xfinity TV packages.
Comcast at this point doesn’t have details about pricing and packaging of the TV bundles that will include Netflix. Starting later this month, Comcast said it will “launch a variety of initial offers” that include a Netflix subscription that will vary by market. Comcast also has the option to bundle Netflix with standalone Xfinity Internet broadband services.
Under the pact, Netflix-related billing will be handled directly by Comcast. If Xfinity TV customers already have a Netflix subscription,...
