Jessika Zen
- Composer
Jessika Zen is an Australian, born in Bandung,
Indonesia. Her father is of Chinese Hakka descent & her mother is of
Chinese Indonesian (Guandong) & Dutch & Portuguese backgrounds. She is
the great-grand daughter of a 4th generation successful mercantile
family in the South-East who rose from poverty during WWI to establish
manufacturing, processing and distribution trades.
She separates her persona from this heritage as an all-encompassing artist and credits her grandfather for instilling passion in the art of storytelling. Her Chinese heritage showed her values of integrity & self-reliance whilst her European background taught her to learn, explore, embrace challenge & new experiences.
As an actress she is drawn to projects that are auteur with freedom of expression with rich characters that dig deep with room to develop and are thought provoking. Due to her constant traveling as a child & living in multiple cities- L.A, Sydney, Bali, Berlin, Milan & Paris, she takes enormous pride in observing & developing deep bonds with prominent figures in the arts & entertainment. Because of her musical sensibilities, she has an amazing ability to perform perfect accents & language work within versatile & diverse roles.
She matches blockbuster appeal with risk-taking, experimental films of sophistication, intelligence & wit that influences tastemakers & loves taking on entirely musical/cabaret/Broadway films.
As a producer/director/writer & filmmaker her style is intuitively autuer-like, preferring to write her own material though she collaborates on any of the above. Most of her projects have undertones of desire and obsession and pays much attention to the aesthetics of the cinematography where every frame, word and underscore has meaning.
Jessika Zen is influenced by the visceral rawness of Aronofsky, the sentimentality of Spielberg, the earthiness of Meirelles & vitality of Tarantino. Woody Allen & Christopher Nolan influence her cerebrally. She chooses projects with fascinating historical backgrounds and usually lives with the piece imbuing method & Ivana Chubbuck approaches to dissecting the script, and chooses to music supervise & compose her own films.
Her darker, edgier style matched with smart sensuality is revealed when modeling in the U.K/Europe In the U.S she is portrayed with a cleaner image & in the South East & Asia & Latin America she is portrayed as smouldering bombshell with an elegant touch.
As a live performer she is vivacious, enthusiastic, possessing larger than life earthy sensuality. On stage as a music producer/singer she is at her best in urban, soul, funk, rnb, house, techno, electro, jazz, classical, electronica, dance, throwback & world music styles and is heavily inspired by Carole King, Paul Simon, Osunlade, Nat King Cole, Buena Vista Social Club, African Yoruba traditions and the music of Brazil. Her live shows are influenced by Rihanna, Beyonce, Alicia Keyes, Madonna with Balinese & foundation dance influences with stylized choreography that strike a deep chord of pure emotion with the audience.
She is a graduate of Hornsby Girls' High Selective School & Berklee College of Music in Film Scoring & Music Synthesis.
In association with the Red Cross she would like to build a school for gifted and talented children in the arts and libraries in the South East as well as a sanctuary for endangered elephants and tigers.
