Casa 0101 Theater will kick off its 15th anniversary season Friday with the world premiere play “Clean Start,” a comedy based on the true story of the window of Freddie de Cordova, the executive producer of Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show.” After de Cordova died in 2001, his widow, Janet de Cordova, was left penniless and wound up moving in with her housekeeper in Mexico. Writers Kathy Fischer and Josefina López based their play on Janet’s experience, except their heroine moves to L.A.'s Boyle Heights neighborhood. Fischer, who has been based in L.A. for 15 years, says she written some 30 scripts, with many going unproduced. “This is probably the one I’m happiest with,” she tells Backstage. “We’ve talked about continuing it as a Web series because we’ve had such a good time doing it.” The play runs at Casa 0101 Theater in Boyle Heights from Jan. 23 – Feb.

Kathy Fischer never met David Angell or his wife, Lynn, but they have touched her life in a way that the Nebraska native could never have imagined when she first decided to try writing for television. David Angell, the Emmy-winning co-creator of Frasier and Wings, and his wife of 30 years were among the nearly 3,000 victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The American Airlines Flight 11 that the Angells expected to take them home to Southern California after a stay in Cape Cod became the first plane to hit the World Trade Center's North Tower shortly before 9 a.m. ET, five years ago to the day.
