He was a television journalist who spent 32 years at WRC-TV in Washington DC, first as a reporter, then as an anchor of the NBC station's early morning news program.
His hobbies included bicycling and swimming. He swam across the Chesapeake Bay twice, a distance of more than four miles.
He received a law degree from Saint Louis University, and subsequently served as a naval officer on the USS John F. Kennedy.
