Brent J Dickey may be the only unknown singer-songwriter around
to be characterized in a novel loosely based on his early days in L.A.
Brady Flick is the anti-musician, anti-hero of the 2001 novel Crucifixion Barbeque by Richard Heller.
Brent's self produced cassette-only releases of the mid-nineties got his band Preservative noticed by producer Michael Vail Blum (Redd Kross, Madonna) who quickly signed the band to a deal. The band completed a three song EP with Blum and was courted by several labels before breaking up in a brawl.
Brent immediately began work on solo material. One year later he signed a production deal with producer Rob Laufer (Fiona Apple, Frank Black) and in 2001 played an ASCAP showcase at SXSW in Autstin, Texas where he was dubbed a "one man renaissance in pop songwriting". The EP "Overblind" was released in 2002 with players including Dan Rothchild (Beck, Heart ),Dan Schwartz (Sheryl Crow), Nick Vincent (Frank Black) and Dan Potruch (P.J. Ollson). Famed music attorney Jay Cooper signed the band and began sending the EP to major record labels. Labels however, passed when Brent appeared at a showcase dressed as the Village People.
Soon Brent found himself playing solo acoustic sets around LA and San Diego with Jason Mraz and Bushwalla and opening a national tour for singer/songwriter Christopher Dale.
Brent's songs have been featured in several independent movies-most recently in the film "Old Days", written and directed by Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville). Brent currently lives in the canyons of Los Angeles with his kitten.
