Discovery reported Thursday it had beaten Wall Street’s earnings expectations for the fourth quarter of 2019, despite lower ratings and continued cord-cutting.
Wall Street forecast earnings per share (Eps) of 93 cents on $2.87 billion in revenue, according to a consensus estimate compiled by Yahoo Finance. Discovery actually reported adjusted Eps of 98 cents on $2.874 billion in revenue, a revenue increase of 2% over 2018’s Q4.
For the three-month period ending Dec. 31, 2019, net income increased to $476 million. Growth there was thanks to lower income tax expense and restructuring charges, as well as higher revenues, which was all partially offset by an increased investment in streaming. That last point led to higher operating costs.

In Q4, advertising and distribution revenues increased both in the U.S. and internationally.
Domestically, ad sales growth was due to pricing increases, which partially offset lower overall TV ratings.

Daredevil “Mad” Mike Hughes died on Saturday after crashing his rocket while filming the new series “Homemade Astronauts” for Science Channel. He was 64.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike Hughes’ family and friends during this difficult time,” a Science Channel spokesperson said in a statement. “It was always his dream to do this launch, and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey.”
Hughes and teammate Waldo Stakes were “working on a manned rocket to space, designing a ‘Rock-oon’ — part rocket, part balloon — that they hope to use to get Mike to the Karman line, the border between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space at about 62 miles high,” according to Science Channel’s series description. “To raise money and awareness for that pricey venture, they plan to first launch Mike 5,000 feet high in a steam-powered rocket.”
This was that attempt.

As a longtime fan of Mythbusters I was sad to see it go after 14 seasons. I think we can all agree that hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman were what made that show so great. They were the heart and soul of the series, but The Science Channel is planning on reviving the series without them.
The are going to relaunch the show with new hosts, and those hosts will be found through a reality TV show the network is launching called Search for the Next MythBusters. I already don't like this idea, but according to THR, the show will focus on finding an "all-new generation of myth-busting science superstars with mind-blowing build skills and nerves of steel."
I understand that Mythbusters is one of the biggest properties for The Science Channel, but will fans of the series tune in for a revival without Savage and Hyneman, or will they shun it?...

From the Press Release:
Investigating abandoned insane asylums is dangerous and downright terrifying, but in Destination America’s all-new series "Ghost Asylum" a fearless crew is on a quest to hunt down chain-rattling ghosts and scary apparitions by any means possible, even if that requires luring themselves as the decoy.
"Ghost Asylum" follows the most passionate paranormal team in America, the Tennessee Wraith Chasers, as they examine some of America’s most frightening asylums, sanitariums, and mental hospitals. Their goal isn’t just to conjure spirits and collect evidence, but they are on a mission to physically capture restless souls with their cutting-edge ghost traps and self-trained Tennessean wit.
