Because
William Rehnquist died before Roberts was confirmed as
Sandra Day O'Connor's successor, Roberts, a former law clerk for
Rehnquist, was instead nominated to take over his former boss's
position as U.S. Chief Justice. Had former Chief Justice Rehnquist
lived another month or two, Roberts likely would have become the first
ever Supreme Court Justice to have clerked for one of his fellow
justices.
