Back in July, a brief teaser was released for No Estamos Solos, a new Peruvian horror movie which looked very much like a haunted house/ghost story. Now, a second trailer is available and as it turns out, there was more to that first impression.Actors Marco Zunino (making his big screen leading man debut after stints in theatre and TV) and Fiorella Díaz play Mateo and Mónica, a married couple who move into their new home with 8 year-old daughter Sofía. Almost inmediately, they become the targets of a supernatural presence which needs to be exorcized; enter a priest played by the prolific Lucho Cáceres, making this not a movie about ghosts but about demonic possession.Judging from the trailer, director Daniel Rodríguez Risco - making a...

El Vientre ("The Womb") a 2014 psychological thriller, was the first foray into genre movies for director Daniel Rodríguez Risco, who had previously made the little-seen drama The Watercolorist in 2008. The old-fashioned, unpretentious Vientre showed Rodríguez's untapped ability to generate creepy, ominous atmosphere and tension, and also led him to found Miedo Entertainment, a production company specializing in genre movies. One of their first efforts will be No Estamos Solos (which should translate as "We Are Not Alone"), Rodríguez's second go-round behind the camera, where he will bring his experience to bear on a haunted house/ghost story. The film follows the story of Mateo (Marco Zunino, a stage and TV actor and host making his film debut) and Mónica (Fiorella Díaz), a young couple who move to a secluded house outside the...

One of Peru's biggest box office successes of the year is Daniel Rodríguez's The Womb; a bit of a surprise when you consider that Rodríguez's new movie also happens to be a horror movie. It's not a horror movie in the modern terms of the genre which relies heavily on everything from found footage and jump scares to gore, but rather in the traditional idea of a horror movie which is as much about the suggestion of bad things happening as it is about actually seeing those bad things.

Peruvian filmmaker Daniel Rodríguez Risco took an unconventional path to making movies. A former Economics student turned businessman, entrepreneur and University Dean, he worked on a second career as a budding filmmaker by making his own short fims - one per year from 1998 to 2005 - some of which won him some prestigious awards and a chance to travel to film festivals worldwide. The shorts also caught the eye of the Tisch School of the Arts at Nyu. Suddenly, the former Dean was back in the classroom, as a 40 year-old Filmmaking student. The experience led to a radical change, with Rodríguez deciding to devote himself to writing and making movies full-time.This led to the release of The Watercolorist in 2008, a decidedly uncommercial, personal...

Mercedes (Mayella Lloclla) is an orphan who comes to work as a maid for the lonely, widowed Silvia (Vanessa Saba), who lives all by herself in a huge, rundown house. While there, she catches the eye of Jaime (Manuel Gold, an actor known for comedic roles, here playing it mostly straight), a backpacker earning money as a handyman. Unknown to both of them, however, is that the whole thing is a plan hatched by Silvia to get Mercedes pregnant and claim her baby as her own, at all costs. That's the plot behind El Vientre, the second film from Daniel Rodríguez Risco, after 2008 drama The Watercolorist. It's the first Peruvian release of the year and also this country's first attempt at a psychological thriller. Genre movies...
