If Nintendo was worried about how its new console was going to be received upon being revealed, it shouldn’t have been: the company’s market value has reportedly risen by $1 billion overall since before its Nintendo Switch announcement video even went live. The Wii U may have fallen flat with consumers and third-party developers, but if this news has taught us anything, it’s that we should never count the Big N out.
The report, which comes by way of Bloomberg (via Game Informer), states that “shares of Nintendo surged as much as 4.6 percent at midday in Tokyo on Thursday, adding more than $1 billion in market value in their biggest rally in a month.” Overall, the company has seen its stock rise by more than 50 percent in 2016 alone, undoubtedly thanks, in part, to the success of Pokemon Go.

The news is not good for the new movie “After Earth,” which means the news is not good for Sony Pictures, or Will Smith … or, it seems, Scientology, whose sci-fi inflected religious system inspired what was to be a summer blockbuster. Now it’s looking like a summer bust.
As the NYTimes reports, “After Earth” took in 18 percent less than the lowest of prerelease expectations and may have ended Smith’s reputation as a surefire action-adventure box office draw — not to mention hurting the budding career of son Jaden, his co-star. Oh, and how much further off track could M. Night Shyamalan’s career go? He used to pose big questions in intriguing ways, but he directed and co-wrote this movie, yet another flop for him.
The movie has been ripped in reviews, and may well add to the narrative of decline and crisis...

The Summer Olympics wasn’t just about Phelps vs. Lochte, or smiling with Gabby Douglas while crying with Jordyn Wieber. It was also about those shower shots of British diver Tom Daley, bronze medalist in the men’s tense 10m platform competition. While NBC Olympic diving producer David Gibson insists he didn’t intentionally place graphics over the divers’ trunks to make them appear nude (“That was a coincidence,” he says, with a laugh), he does confirm that those Daley shower shots were, in fact, something he knew would be a hit with viewers. “I think we pretty much knew instantly,...

The Edinburgh Fringe has revealed the best and worst jokes at this year's festival. Quick-fire pun merchant Tim Vine won the funniest joke award, sponsored by TV channel Dave, for his one-liner: "I've just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I'll tell you what, never again." The top three was completed by David Gibson ("I'm currently dating a couple of anorexics. Two birds, one stone.") and Emo Phillips ("I picked up a hitch hiker. You've got to when you hit them.") Gary Delaney was the only comedian to feature in the top ten twice with: "Dave drowned, so at the funeral we got him a wreath in the shape of a lifebelt. Well, it's what he would have wanted," and: "As a kid I was made to walk the plank. We couldn't afford a dog." Also appearing in the best jokes list were Jack Whitehall (more)...

Macquarie Research analyst David Gibson has predicted that all the current platform holders will make major announcements at next week's E3 Expo. The industry expert suggested that Sony will take the opportunity to unveil its successor to the PSP, which is rumoured to have a touch screen and no Umd slot.
