- Shortly after Otto Plath died, Sylvia presented Aurelia with a "contract" promising to never marry again. While it is not known if Aurelia actually signed it, she never did remarry.

- Blocked publication of Sylvia's novel, "The Bell Jar," in the United States for eight years, saying it represented "the basest ingratitude" to those who had loved and helped Sylvia. She later published letters Sylvia wrote to her to counter the image she had gained as the supposed basis of "Bell Jar"'s cold, unfeeling mother.
