Both Richards & Lecavalier became good friends with Cloutier during his time as Tampa Bay's starting goaltender from 1999 to 2001, until Cloutier was traded to Vancouver, on Feb. 7th, 2001,in exchange for former Canucks defenseman Adrian Aucoin and a second round draft pick.

- Suffered an abdominal injury during the regular season with the AK Kazan Bars of the Russian League, and required surgery. Was forced to decline the invitation to join Team Canada for the 2005 IIHF World Hockey Championships as he couldn't heal from the surgery soon enough to report for training camp. (April 2005)

- On February 26, 2008, roughly 3 hours before the NHL trade deadline, Richards was traded to the Dallas Stars in a blockbuster deal along with goaltender Johan Holmqvist for goalie Mike Smith, centre Jeff Halpern, winger Jussi Jokinen and a 2009 4th round draft pick. (February 2008)
