Was the high priestess of the African-based Candomble religion in
Brazil. Historians claim Alaketu was a fifth generation descendant of
the royal family of Aro, which is now in the present-day nation of
Benin. Her family members were brought to Brazil as slaves and were
instrumental in establishing Candomble in Brazil.
