We made a couple of absolutely huge discoveries Saturday night – not the least of which is that Benson Henderson is human!
The main event of Ufc Fight Night 49 – Benson Henderson vs. Rafael dos Anjos – was a fight that fans and media pundits (including WhatCulture) began calling for after Henderson’s last outing against Rustam Khabilov. Thing is, most of us assumed that this would be another solid win for Benson Henderon. Rafael dos Anjos is a great fighter without question, but no one really expected him to upset Henderson, a man who hadn’t lost to anyone not named Anthony Pettis in years. The going logic was that Henderson would beat Dos Anjos, lock horns with maybe one more contender between now and the December bout champ Pettis has with Gilbert Melendez, and then fight for the title in early 2015.
It appears that dos Anjos, however, wasn’t told about...

Latino animation Chico & Rita is set to become a stage musical, and the stars were out for the Chemical Brothers' new film
Cuban heels
Hot on the heels of its Oscar nomination last week, animated feature Chico & Rita is set to become a stage musical. The film, telling the romantic story of a Havana piano player and a beautiful singer separated by time and circumstance, has all the ingredients for a stage show, including a successful soundtrack by the late-flowering Cuban musician Bebo Valdés. The film also features music from Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Tito Puente and Thelonious Monk, and is set in the late-1940s period when the New York jazz scene began to absorb immigrant percussionists from Havana's nightclub scene such as Chano Pozo. The film, produced on the Isle of Man by CinemaNX and directed by Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal, has already won a European...

It’s a scorching summer afternoon in Athens, Ga., the last day of Athfest 2003, and a few hundred people wait in the middle of Washington Street for the next act to take the hastily assembled outdoor stage. Finally, about 20 minutes late, local shoulda-beens Bloodkin slither onstage, ghostly pale, disheveled and sweat-soaked, hiding behind mirrored aviator shades. Frontman Danny Hutchens is dressed head-to-toe in black, his long, brown hair starting to gray from years of diving headfirst into places deeper and darker than most civilians could dream. But even more frightening is the sight of Hutchens’ best friend and lifelong musical partner-in-crime, the Keith to his Mick,...
