- He was a photo journalism student at Manchester Metropolitan University. On April 11, 2003 he was shot in the head by the Israeli army while photographing a peace movement in Rafah. He went into a comatose vegatative state for nine months and then, as as result of this, died from neurodisability.
- His girlfriend was Libby Powell, winner of a Guardian Writing Award, inspired by his life to become a journalist and activist.
- His story is depicted in The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall (2008).
